Jackrabbit41
Just a few questions for y'all that have been in the back of my head, but now that I'm finally able to do my 8.8 swap id thought id ask. Will my comanche be able to handle 35s with 4.10s? Will it drive ok? Would the steering be too weak off road? Or should I just go with some 33s? Should I get adjustable upper and lower control arms ASAP or will it be fine? thanks oh and also, is there any cheaper way to rig up a 4wd linkage then the Novak conversions kit? Ive seen homemade stuff but never for a np
87Warrior
http://www.boostwerksengineering.com My TJ was a dog (4.0/5spd) with 35's and 4.10 gears. It will drive, but it won't be fun. You will want to upgrade your steering, brakes and axle shafts with 35's. I don't understand why you would need to switch to adjustable control arms by simply doing a tire swap? cody.quattlebaum.16
I have a 2006 TJ 4.0/auto and I run 4.88s with 33s. It is just right, if you have a manual you can get away with 4.56 on 33s. 4.88s are just right for me though, actually improved my mpg.
mnkyboy
I've driven a few Jeeps with 4.0l, 5spd, 4.10s, and 35s. they go down the road somewhat ok but lack power offroad.

banshee
I ran 35 Rogers for years with 410s without any issues, changed to 488s much better at take off from a light, and much better while in overdrive

REEDracing94
You will be fine, you will just be using 4low much more often offroad. I've ran 3.73s in my tj and lj on 35s for a while until I went to 4.88s. I have yet to break anything but u joints on d30 and 35s, no need to upgrade for light wheeling unless you lock it. Steering would be a high priority for me, the stock set up is horrible. Control arms depends on lift hieght not so much tire size (though I have bent stock upper control arms). I haven't had any issues with stock linkages after completely pulling them off, straightening them, and adjusting them properly... But I have heard of issues. This one may work with modification? http://www.boostwerksengineering.com/231-HD-Shift-Linkage-Auto-Trans-_p_25.html

For this 8.8 swap and lift I got a new adjustable track bar but it's going to be stock other then that

REEDracing94
The grand Cherokee set up is better than stock and a cheap upgrade. Personally I always run 1 ton tre's and a inverted t set up. A little less steering feel but about as solid as it gets while using ends instead of hiems. Currie is a nice set up too but expensive
mvusse
I ran 35s with 3.55 gears for years. Overdrive was useless on the road, but plenty of power off road in low range. Locked both axles, spicer cold forged joints in the front, 97 spline 8.25" in the rear. Over the course of 3 years of wheeling I broke more than 20 axle shafts and u joints and grenaded 4 differentials before I went to 1 ton axles and 37s. The Comanche is now dead (severe frame rot) and about to be replaced by a rust free 99 XJ.

cody.quattlebaum.16
You could. They'll usually charge close to what you could buy a new set up with a warranty from advance. Use promo code trt30 or trt41. Buy moog and you'll have a lifetime warranty. It's about $105-$110 after the discount. Cheaper than any other set up. MrSimon
V8 wj has solid steering you can swap in for cheap Should I just go to a junkyard and pull off the steering from a zj? No. The only difference is a slightly stronger tie rod (and that's only on the V8 models). It really isn't much of an upgrade. I've seen them bend just as easy as stock XJ rods. As was stated above, the entire stock XJ steering is weak when you go offroad. There are a bunch of companies who make nice 1 ton set-ups. They come with heavy duty TREs and heavy duty drag link and tie rod. You ream out your knuckles and bolt up the new stuff. It's pretty simple, a whole lot stronger, and only costs a couple hundred bucks.

The v8 tie rod is a hell of a lot stronger than the stock xj/mj setup. http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/11060.html This is the OTK 1ton steering i got, If you want i can run over & show you it in person.
