vinyl dye and my new black interior

Recommended Posts

yep, got some of the parts from mfpdm today, so I'm starting the swap.

bought some spray-on vinyl dye from napa to spray all the parts I didn't have in black. i'll post the name of it when I remember.

here's the progress so far, and it's great!

so for anyone interested into swapping to a black interior...you really only need the seats (if that, this stuff will paint anything as it's a dye) and about $50 in this paint to swap the whole interior to black. oh, and the black seat belts of course.

How easy was the application? Looks like it applies just like spray paint.

yep, it's spray-on.

I've done both door panels now, and did a set of grey hockey-stick armrests (sorry mfpdm...not using the ones you sent me anymore :P), and the rear trim piece for under the window so far. next are the B-pillars and lower trim. he has sent me the kick panels so I don't need to paint them.

I installed the kneeboard and it looks great! noticed ya kept them tweeters ;)

anywho, I'll be gone a couple days here so hopefully when I get back I'll put up more pics and give ya info on the dye.

btw, i tried scratching it off and short of gouging the vinyl it won't come off. also smells like fresh *ahhhhh* paint :D that will wear off and then it'll be back to the smell of mouse (damn heaterbox...this is my chance to swap in the a/c now too as I need to remove the dash to paint it or install a black one)

we did that to my stepbrothers '76 nova interior, went from olive green to black

covers REALLY nicely

how is it holding up?

I'm fairly sold on the product but think that I would eventually like to get all the right parts in black...then build this "painted" interior into the spare parts interior or put it in the 89

I did it years ago in an old chrysler. Same as you I had a black leather interior with a few missing or bad pieces. Anything soft it held up awesome. Anything hard plastic as you'd imagine, it didn't penetrate and you could scratch it off with some effort. I anticipated this so I scuffed it all with a red scotch brite pad first.

I had the xj heatertube run under the center console...but that was pointless so I decided to remove that, and block off the opening for it in the xj heaterbox bottom with some plastic material leftover off of the camaro.

then I put in the new black center console, and rebuilt/painted my xj mounts (driver's side front bracket had one spot rotted away, so I replaced it), and put it together. when I put xj bucket seats in comanches, I use the rocker action ones and offset the seats 9/16" outward to maintain a neutral position. works out real well.

now, I'm going to go paint the B-pillar trim and lower trim pieces, trim up and install the kick panels (xj's don't have the trimmed out spot for the e-brake by your foot), and install them. and A-pillars. the rear trim is already painted and ready to go, and I need to recover the carpeted piece in black to match.

then all I will need to do is install the defroster trim, and the tan (painted black) black and install it.

got everything else from him today except for the glovebox door and the glovebox under-trim. So I'm installing it all today and will finish painting the tan trim parts that I have black to finish it off.

You should get the glovebox stuff tomorrow. It's looking good. jamminz.gif

Kinda getting hard to see in there with all that black.

You still planning on doing the A/C?

I'll get new pics in a minute...I painted my tan B-pillar trim, under-window trim, lower trim, and the passenger side A-pillar (the one you sent me cracked...whatever, I didn't expect either to make it so I'm happy either way :D ), and I also painted the seatbelt male end covers.

all of that is installed along with the kick panels (trimmed the driver's side one down so my ebrake would work), and also the defroster vent trim piece is installed.

All that is left to change are the seat belts (no black ones...mfpdm can ya help me with that one??? I think I may be able to adapt the cherokee ones to work..), the main dash to black (painting the tan one), the glovebox door and trim, steering column and wheel swapped for black...if I find them (again, mfpdm help??), and recover the carpeted piece in the back to be black. also headliner, overhead console, and visors/clips need to be swapped to black still.

yes, I am putting the a/c in still...my heaterbox smells like mice and i'm sick of it, even if i don't put a functional a/c in, it will make it that much better.

tomorrow I'm using this diagram

relaywire.jpg

to add relays in my [camaro] control center under the hood for the fog lights, @$$hole light i have in the back, and using my 4th switch as a power switch for the fans...to override the computer system being the only thing to turn them on..I'd rather be cooler than not. think I should have one for each fan or just hook it up so that I control only one fan and the computer can control the other/both?

anyways, here's more pics of the new black interior. I'm impressed with the vinyl paint on soft vinyl, not so much on the harder plastic type vinyl (trim pieces...they scratch easily as stated above).

right after I finished the driver's side

blue driver's side stuff removed

passenger's side

finished passenger side

ironically, though I don't necessarily like my dog, he's usually allowed in the truck

less than a year old australian shepherd, Jack

as you can see, the seatbelts are still blue YET I painted the caps (saved the blue and painted my red ones)

They make plastic paint for interior peices. If you ever watch 'Unique Whips' or whatever that stupid show is, you can see people paying thousands of dollars to have their interior peices spraypainted.

I'd imagine it's a little tougher and adheres to plastic a bit better. But perhaps it is totally the same thing as what you're already using.

One of several thousand reasons I stopped watching that show after 3 airings. I also have not found those guys to be very educational, and they all seem like momma's baby's gones retarded/rich.

Off topic: I'm still waiting for Blue Torch Fabworks' X-Fab TV to begin airing. I don't know if that became a lost cause, or what, but at least it would be alot more related to my hobbies...

On topic: On unique whips, the paint they use, is crap you can get at wal mart or whatever. Think cheap, low quality, not worth my 64,000 dollar investment for them.

I think the absolute best way to recolor your interior, using paint/dye/whatever method is to actually spend some quality time with hot soapy water, degrease all the stuff you want to recolor, rough them up, let them dry, clean the dried dust off, and use an at least decent quality spray paint, if not low grade auto paint to really give the color some character. Possibly even use some primer.

The only other way is to actually go out and find a vehicle that has the color interior you want, and hope its all in great shape.

hahaha, this is THE best paint you can get for this. i'll type the name tomorrow...i always forget it.

but yeah, it's temporary. everything that I've painted will be replaced at first sight of the correct factory colored piece.

hence, i cleand the crap outta everything with 100% simple green solution and a scotch pad. end result, it holds up pretty well, and my arms are tired.

A good friend use to say to me when we ended up doing the not so fun stuff at work, "I think of hard work as a free workout"

Even thought the one A-pillar cracked were you able to make the other one work? Just wondering seeing how that they were from an 2dr XJ.

Well, at least you are taking a good approach to the situation. some of those JU people have not the slightest clue on how to check their oil. thats sad...

Speaking of oil... BMW really has me ticked off with their new engine with no friggin dipstick!

theres a dummy light for low oil and change oil. :headpop:

I guess if you have a new BMW, the dealer is god, and you must  to them.

yes, I made the driver's side a-pillar work. it required a further cut-down of about 3 inches, but they are identical. I could have used the passenger one, except that it cracked right through the middle of where the oh $#!& handle goes. :-/

no worries, i'll find everything in original black sooner or later.

That's what everything is like... It's the way of the future.

Ok, so I googled it and found nothing. I gotta ask: What is "mfpdm"? Is that a good source of parts?

Only when I have a good day at the JY. :D

If you haven't caught it by now, he's referring to me. :wavey:
