Sir Jacob the 2nd Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Hey guys, I just wanted to take a quick poll here and see if there are any specific break in oils that yall have used after rebuilding your engine, I had a few in mind but I would like more opinions!
Jeepman Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I used Royal Purple Break in oil for my 4.7L stroker engine
mik666 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 use it in everything after rebuild http://www.amazon.com/Brad-Penn-Oil-009-7120S-Engine/dp/B002RF8IN2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436468279&sr=8-1&keywords=brad+penn+break+in+oil
shelbyluvv Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I prefer name brand break in oil. Royal Purple or Lucas are the ones I use the most. Don't use a break in additive. There is always the chance it won't mix right and wipe out a cam lobe.
Sir Jacob the 2nd Posted July 9, 2015 Author Posted July 9, 2015 Awesome thanks guys, royal purple is what I was initially considering so that pretty much backs that up.
dasbulliwagen Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 After break in make sure to continue using an oil with a high zinc content. It will make sure things stay happy.
mik666 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 like i mentioned Brad Penn - has one of the highest levels of zinc - i run it in all my motors (jeep, harley, nortons, chevys) excellent break in oil too http://www.penngrade1.com/zinc.aspx
rearview Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 My thinking is you are looking for the least amount of detergents. You need percentages in the teens for both zinc and phosphorus. The phosphorus is the component that provides the early protection in the hardening process. Everyone has their favorite brand name. Some prefer the Brad Penn Kendall green oil, some like the fancy names with the dyes to color the product, and some like just plain old run of the mill, brand name, Penzoil , mineral based racing oils, The key is the percentages of zinc and importantly phosphorus content.
Megadan Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 AMSOIL also has a really good break in oil that I have used in the past on other vehicles. Like said ^above^ the ZDDP additives (zinc and phosphorus) are the key ingredient for initial break in.Once everybody has debated the best break in oil, you can then start a new debate on the best break in methods lol.
Sir Jacob the 2nd Posted July 10, 2015 Author Posted July 10, 2015 Thanks guys y'all have been helpful. AMSOIL also has a really good break in oil that I have used in the past on other vehicles. ggcnash Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Whatever name brand oil you want with some break in additive I used castrol with Lucas in the mj and wrangler wrangler has 150k since rebuild strong as ever! People way over think this topic, but the best thing to do is listen to your engine builder!
ggcnash Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 If rebuilding your self follow cams break in instructions!

Once everybody has debated the best break in oil, you can then start a new debate on the best break in methods lol. Lol and what is your preferred method impulse Well, on the last two engines I built, I did an initial break in start, changed the oil, and drove them to the dyno. Both of those engines to my knowledge are still running strong, one for over 7 years now, and is semi daily driven. Many people think dyno break ins are stupid and prefer the old fashioned method of driving nice for a couple thousand miles. Hence my comment about debating on the best method lol.
Sir Jacob the 2nd Posted July 11, 2015 Author Posted July 11, 2015 If rebuilding your self follow cams break in instructions! My cam didn't come with any break in instructions unfortunately. I was a little surprised myself.
