Changing the dash out is actually pretty easy.

If you can find a replacement I would recommend it as your best option.

Otherwise you will only be able to cover up whats wrong with it.

^That.  There were enough XJ's made that you have a better chance of finding a decent condition dash out of another vehicle for cheap.  I repaired a plastic dash once using a plastic welding kit and lots of sanding.  I then had a friend clean up and glue new soft vinyl over said plastic.  It turned out pretty good, but it cost me over $100 to do, and all the labor was free.  If you had a shop do something similar, it could easily cost hundreds.

Before tackling a full-blown replacement, you can always try something like this: http://www.amazon.com/No-Liquid-Leather-Vinyl-Repair/dp/B000E24APU/ref=pd_sim_263_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=00Q90VRQ89F9ASZSWHCK

If it works, you spent ten bucks and saved a lot of work. If it doesn't work ... you blew ten bucks and you would have done the work otherwise anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions I would love to change the dash out but Comanches are very few here I doubt I would find a replacement dash think I'm gonna try some type of repair of some sought if I don't like it I'll just get a dash mat and cover it

Cherokee dash up until 96 is the same

^^^ Correct. And I believe you posted in one of your first posts that there are a lot of Cherokees even though there aren't many Comanches. Remember, the Comanche was the pickup truck version of the Cherokee -- just like the Ranger and the Explorer. The floors are different so the seat risers won't interchange, but otherwise basically everything from the rear of the car forward is the same as from a 4-door Cherokee. And the Cherokee started two years earlier, so for a dashboard cover you have your pick of 1984 through 1996 Cherokees.

Another alternative is a dash mat if you just don't want to see the cracks and if they're only on top.

Where did  you get yours?

I've always wondered if there was a decent dash mat available for our trucks... how is the fit and finish?

I have them in all three of my MJs and have had them for many years. Don't remember where I purchased them but think one was from eBay, all are actual Dashmat brand. They fit well, but sometimes if the defrost is blowing on high they will bellow and after many years the elastic band that holds the glove box cover in place stretches, I just tie it to take up the slack. Here are some more pictures.
