Hello, I'm in the market for a new water pump and was interested in the flow kooler high flow pump part number 1748 but its only listed for 91 and newer 4.0's though, is there a difference in the older Renix era water pumps?

EDIT ; correct part number is 1747, my mistake.

I have the water pump off my 2000 XJ 4.0 block currently cooling my 1988 MJ's 4.0 Renix block. Didn't notice anything different from the one I took off.

DO not waste your time with Flowcooler pumps. They are problematic. Either go to your local Carquest, Napa, etc or the dealer.

:agree:  If the system is in good working order there's no need for a high flow water pump if your engine is stock.

Thanks for the heads up, do you know what problems they have?

I went thru 2. First one the bearings went on me within a couple months, second one I never did figure out what was wrong with it...just wasn't cooling the xj right. I think the fins inside were cut wrong. Went back to a Napa stock on and haven't had issues since.

I think there are two lengths of water pumps or hieghts. At least for XJs. So need to match with the old one or could change the pulley to match. About '03 the bolt pattern changed. As for water temps, don't forget to replace the radiator cap. Might also try a Robert Shaw or I thinm Mr Gasket HI Flow.

The change you refer to is also a change in the overall block design. In 2000 the 4.0L block was redesigned considerably rendering it nearly incompatible with earlier vehicles. The mounting positions and filter boss locations, along with the addition of a spring tensioner were among the biggest changes. This change was only implemented on the Wrangler (TJ), and Grand Cherokee (WJ) platforms ... with the XJ Cherokee continuing into its final year with the same base block design of previous years.

As stated previously ... the water pump from my 2000 XJ was exactly the same as the water pump from my 1988 MJ and it resides there still to this day.

I have had no issues with AC DELCO and CARDONE pumps thus far (I've owned my XJ since 2002, and changed the pump three times twice "because I was in there anyway" keeping the pump as a working spare).
