ParadiseMJ
I was reading up on this post... http://comancheclub.com/topic/47195-3-soa-am-i-crazy/ ...because I'm sick of the shock mounts restricting my ground clearance so much. My MJ is lifted 3" now with a bastard pack made of stock springs, and a full length AAL. The front is also stock springs, with a spacer and an extra isolator. Measures out at 3" front & rear. The shock mounts hang down there so that there is only about 6" clearance on either side. I've been toying with an SOA job, but I really don't want to add all the things I'd have to add (adj. arms, track bar, etc.). So is everyone that is SUA have the same issue? I feel like it a.) looks stupid and b.) seriously limits things like running in ruts or going over rocks...even small ones. What does every one else do?? Incommando
Go to Barnes 4x4 and order shock tabs that weld directly to the tube.

Eagle
Image Not Found That setup is great for street use, but it doesn't improve the ground clearance at all compared to the stock mounts. Might even be worse for ground clearance.

What the hell is the difference? Beats me. The OP is the one who wants to raise his shock mounts. Mine never dragged when I wheeled the '88, but maybe I'm a wimpy wheeler. HOrnbrod
To answer the OP's question, for stock SUA config, the shock mount is the lowest point and will drag first. But even using aftermarket shock tabs on the axle tubes will only net you an extra inch or two clearance since the spring plate is then the lowest point. For more clearance, you could always use square u-bolts and mount the spring plate with shock mount on the top like so: http://www.jeeptech.com/susp/ubolt.html

What the hell is the difference? The difference is about 2". The 44 sits easily 2" higher than the bottom of the shock mount/plate...on mine anyway. It was just a question. Thanks Hornbrod...that's a better idea.
PIKE
Search for a Dynatrac U Bolt flip kit. I put one on mine years ago and like it. Don't know if they still make them. Came with weld on shock mounts, but I ended up making my own mounts. I would post a pic but I am in New Mexico and my MJ is in Washington.
daking
This is what I did Image Not Found However, I'm going to weld on different mounts. I want the mounts to be longer, like "Jeep Drivers" picture. Just mine won't angle down, they will be near level. The longer mounts will help prevent wheel hop.
Pete M
don't know what the kit is, but I found this in my internet searches.
Pete M
and another apparently made by dynatrac a decade ago
Pete M
or you might be able to use chevy parts. don't know the measurements on them though.
ParadiseMJ
Thanks, this gives me a starting point. Dynatrac still makes a kit but it's listed for Wranglers and CJ's on a D30. But seems easy enough to fab up with my own steel using their design. Looks like it'd raise the spring plate and flipping the shock mounts would pull those up a few inches too. Appreciate the ideas. Incommando
Yes but wouldn't that short of a shock effect flex if nothing else?
