sinkrun
Can a drive shaft be so rusty theres A danger of breaking. Its on a XJ it has VERY HEAVY scale compared to the one on my 89 MJ looks looks like new compared to this thing. Its not a wheeler just a driver. Megadan
If it worries you that much, take it to a local driveshaft shop and get their opinion. Worst case scenario, they can build you another one for usually a fairly low price
AeroNautical
Yeah, wouldn't risk it. Taker her off, take it to a driveline shop and have a new one made. Retubing a driveshaft is fairly cheap, under $100 around here.
Pete M
what you're describing is fairly common, but not usually a structural problem. but when in doubt, stab at it with a screw driver and see how solid it feels.
HOrnbrod
Get an aluminum shaft made.

sinkrun
Headed to the PNP Friday there $21.00 there if I can find a good one. Anyone know what years would be the same, its A 2001 XJ?
Pete M
avoid anything before 87. other than that, year matters not. try to find one with the same engine/trans.
Strokermjcomanche
Is there a difference between the dry output shaft with the rubber boot on the newer Xjs vs the shaft with the rear output seal on the older ones ?
AeroNautical
The newer transfer cases had a closed system, in which you could remove the rear driveshaft and not have it leak, letting you putt around front wheel drive if you wanted. I believe the splinage on the newer cases increased as well, you'll need a new slip yoke.
Pete M
are we talking about front or rear driveshafts?

I have a lot of experience searching parts at pic-n-pulls, and you will find the rear driveshafts are bent when they move the vehicle into place with a forklift. Pete M
sorry, I was thinking fronts. I know less about the XJ rear shafts other than the sealed t-case output came about in ~96.
Incommando
The yoke from my '91 2wd fit fine on the sealed t-case output I swapped in. The donor was a '98.
