Lowly
So hit some big potholes today and my alternator stopped the belt still turns from the other components but it seems stuck. Anyways it started to burn the belt up. Is the alternator shot?
Jeep Driver
Apparently.
ftpiercecracker1
based on your description, it would seem that the alternator has seized, which means yes it is shot.
jimoshel
Bearings in the alternator are shot. Replace it. Just went thru this. Truck would start and run fine. Then the alternator would stop charging. Pop the hood, broken belt. Would spin all the pulleys by hand, no problem. Replaced the belt. It lasted less than 5 minutes. Replaced the belt 3 times B4 I figured it out. The alternator would spin when turned by hand. When running the engine the alt would freeze and there went the belt. Replaced the alt. All is fine. Lowly
Thank you! Great information. Any suggestions for a good aftermarket alternator?
Herc
I upgraded mine to a high amp alternator from a Grand Cherokee V8, 135 amp IIRC. Bolt in and plug in to the factory harness(91-92 MJ only), larger casing but still fits without interference. Mind you I several lights, a winch and other various electrical gizmo's, and more to add so wanted the headroom for charging a second battery as well. As for a good aftermarket alternator, AC Delco and Bosch are readily available. For the older Comanche's different alternator and wiring.
Lowly
So I pulled an alternator off an 1986 Jeep Comanche. Now this alternator used a v-belt being from 1986. My Comanche engine uses a serpentine belt no v-belt on it. Is there any way to convert this Alternator to run a serpentine belt? I figure you could switch out the pulley with the bad alternator? Or do I need to find another one?
neohic
Unless it's a known good one for a real cheap-o price, I wouldn't fuss around with a used alternator. Either have yours rebuilt or just go with a parts store rebuilt unit.
jimoshel
the thing to watch out for when swapping pulleys is belt alignment. If the alignment is OK then no problem. I ran my '87 2.5 for a year with the alt pulley a 1/2 out of alignment with the others. The reason for it's short life. Swapped alternators and all is OK
Incommando
As Jim said: you can swap pulleys just make sure it all lines up when you are done
