JeepsOLot
This is on an '88 Eliminator, 4.0, BA10/5 2WD, full gauge cluster (no idiot lights). Speedo just quit while driving. What is the most trouble prone thing on the speedometer, the gauge itself, the gear at the speedo, the cable, or the gear in the tranny? Wanted to know what would be the most likely cause, so I can start there. Thanks! Jerry
relyt120
The cable is probably broken. You are might be out of luck too because they are impossible to find new. The plastic retaining clip that keeps it seated in the cluster is also prone to braking so keep that in mind while searching for a replacement. JeepsOLot
Thanks, guys! MJ Junkie, I got the info you just posted in searching, may have even been posted by you. One question, my '86 (2.8, auto 2WD, idiot light cluster) still has the speedo cable. Since we're yanking out the cluster and dash in the '86 anyway, can I use that cable in the '88 Eliminator? Crash
IIRC, the early xj mj used a twist type cable on both ends, not clip on gauge

JeepsOLot
I haven't got the '88 off yet, but, just from feel, the gauge end feels different then the one out of the '86. I pulled the '86 cable already. Found out what happened, apparently, when I pulled the tranny and put it back in, I routed the cable too close to the exhaust manifold, melting it. Oh, well, might be this weekend before I can get to it. Thanks, everyone! Jerry
JeepsOLot
Well, I swapped them yesterday, and I have a working speedo! The ends are different at the speedo end, but, I was able to make it work. This will be ok until I get the correct cable. Thanks, everyone! Detonator
So has anyone tried fixing a cable. The housing on my cable separated, causing the cable to now have slack and no longer engage at the end. Thus no speedo now. Has anyone tried epoxying the housing back together? Was thinking about sleeving it with a soda straw then epoxying the severed cable housing back together. outlaw star
I put a YJ Wrangler cable on mine. Both ends plugged in including the firewall grommet. Only thing was its about 1.5' longer than my original one. I pulled the excess back into the tunnel and secured it. I don't have cruise control, just my foot.
