Water pump mounting bolt broke and seized in block .

My friend was changing his water pump on his 4.0 . In the process of taking the water pump mounting bolts out he broke 2 of them off with 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the bolt still sticking out of the block . I went over to his house after work and was able to get one of the bolts out with a pair of vise grips and a bernzomatic but the bottom one will not budge at all . I drained the antifreeze that was at the bottom of the block so I could get the bottom bolt heated without the antifreeze fighting the heat .

What have you guys done to get them out ? I'd rather not drill and tap a hole if I don't have to . Thanks in advance .

Heat it cherry red and let it cool 3 times.

Or, try that Freezing penetrating oil that's out now. Works pretty good.

I was going to heat the crap out of the bottom bolt , but figured I'd ruin the mounting surface for the pump or even crack the block . Is that a possibility?

Heat......penatrante ( of our choice or availability ) repeatedly.

If you can still get nut(s) two would be nice with no welder available. Vise-grips slowly bite away what's left.

We are all are saying we've been there.

This is also when some HUGE amounts of patience pays off.  This is normally my failure.

BUT twice now I have worked out broken exhaust bolts at the back  4.0 heads by using penetrate and taping back and forth with a small punch & hammer.

GOOD LUCK!
