Mating HO headers to Renix exhaust with HO Downpipe

Recommended Posts

I would like to use the stock HO exhaust manifold (headers) for my swap but it doesn't have the bung hole and the dowpipe won't line up with the Renix crossover pipe. Does anyone know if I can use an HO crossover/down pipe (which has the bung) and whether it might match up with the rest of the exhaust under the truck? I'm looking at  Walker front pipe off Rockauto:

Get your engine in and take the truck to a muffler shop and they'll make you one for $90.

the muffler shop will make me what for $90? A bung hole, a cross over pipe? The Walker down pipe is only $45 and it has the bung hole, although I might have to extend the wires on the o2 sensor. I was just curious if anyone had done this or otherwise had insight on whether it would mate to Cat on my old exhaust.

I've often thought a short flex pipe behind the bellhousing would save the manifolds from cracking. Plan to use the Renix flange (has no crush) a custom down from that to a flex pipe behind the bell and mate that to my current exhaust.

And adding bung for the 02 sensor is easy... Drill hole, have welder burn bung in. Any muffler shop will have them or they can be found at auto parts stores or even eBay for little cost.

Wires will reach....

A question regarding the egr:my plan is to use the ho exhaust manifold and renix intake, is it ok that i plug the egr port on the manifold and plug all the vacuum lines for the egr? I worry that my o2 sensor will read wrong and cause a lean condition.

Thanks

Don't worry about that.

I still have yet to get the stock pipe out of the stock Renix manifold, it takes a 27mm wrench BTW (common enough up here in metric igloo land). They come off the intake easily enough, but I don't want to mangle them as the pipe and exhaust manifold are near mint - no cracks and barely crusty. Be a shame to destroy them, someone will have a need.

In any event, I swapped a HO intake, head, and exhaust onto my renix block. Runs great with no EGR, no issues what so ever. I was even getting 20-22mpg pre swap with the EGR system removed and tossed. Now I'm pushing 18 post swap but my exhaust manifold is warped and I have an exhaust leak when cold. And I have a crap load more power with the larger TB, she pulls something fierce, so power take gas, so I guess I'm still doing good. Haven't bothered to track it since the 32's went on though, speedo is now 10-ish km/h slow at 110km/h ... Needs correcting.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the wealth of answers. I found on NAXJA that the downpipe port calls for a 7/8 x 18 so I assumed the intake side would be SAE as well. I was about to order a oil drain plug from a 1963 Jeep off OReilly's based off that information. Maybe 7/8 and 22mm are so close you can get them both into the hole?

So I guess I'll order the plug from the Bavarian. I haven't ordered from them since I gave up on chasing gremlins in my E60 and traded it in. Ah the memories.

Thanks again.
