Hello all, been looking here for a while but have not posted.  New to MJs but not new to Jeeps.

I picked up an 88 Pioneer about a month ago as a new project to replace my recently sold CJ.  4.0 with AW4 auto short bed 4x4.  Since it only has 73,000 miles on it, I had to have it.  Have driven it a little bit to get a feel for it before I start 'fixing' it.  I spent a few hours cleaning up the grounds and some simple maintenance.  It was a little slow to crank so I cleaned up the battery terminals.  Still slow to crank.  I disconnected the starter to clean the cables up and found the small wire (neutral safety switch?) was so corroded I had to cut the wire to get the starter out.  The whole starter was coated in a healthy coat of rust so I replaced it instead of trying to remove the rusted bolt.  I cleaned up the connections and replaced the end I cut off.  Installed the new starter and ... no start.  I cranks like a champ but no start.  I did get it to catch once after it sat about an hour.  As soon as I tried to put it in gear it died and will not start again. I tried the search function but did not find what I was looking for.  I am guessing its in the neutral safety switch but am not sure... Any help would be appreciated!

I suppose the Renix system differently than the HO does, but it's my understanding the NSS will only produce a no-crank, not a no-start. Before I cleaned up my '91's NSS, even if it wouldn't crank, it would always start when I jumped the solenoid.

 

That said, cleaning up the NSS is always a good idea. The inside of mine looked (and almost smelled) like how I imagine the bottom of a sewage settling pond might look. If you do take it apart, pack it good with dielectric grease and run a bead of RTV or silicone around the edge to keep crap out.

Chased this issue once before.  

 

Did read that you checked all the connections/grounds.  

 

Would go back over them again.  My issue was cables that looked good at the connections

but were totally crap in other areas.  

 

The NSS as suggested is a good place to check AND is also a good maintenance issue if nothing else

but try the N position and just at and just past the Park position may help troubleshoot the NSS. 

 

When/if you do the NSS soak that thing with PB Blaster or something and try not to pry on it when attempting

to coax it off. They are more easily breakable than one would think.

Ok, weird stuff...  Finally got time to try to fix the Comanche.  I went to clean the NSS and figured I would try it one last time before I took it apart. It fired right up.  Put it in gear just fine with no stalling.  Driven it all over town the past two days no problems.  Are these things possessed?

I'll take a guess at the fuel pump relay.

No, they're not possessed.

 

Click on the link in my signature and do Tips 1 through 5. 27 is never a bad idea at some point.
