I saw this ad on craigslist and wanted to share in case anyone wanted a bumper built locally.  Thoughts?  It's not mine FYI

Hi, I build and sell Jeep Cherokee ( XJ ) and Comanche ( MJ ) bumpers.

Currently the Fronts are being offered, with the rears coming out next month.

We also sell special Rocker panel replacement panels, we call ROCKers. They are a press formed 3/16 weld in rocker AND slider combo. They look good, and work even better.

Check out our website for more info.

We do all kinds of off road and general welding / fab work, with over 10 years experience.

Thanks, Joe Spadano

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi guys, Thanks for sharing 87spartruck.

I am really looking forward to building my new MJ. I'm taking allot of pictures and plan on doing a writeup, as well as become more active in the forums. Currently I'm rebuilding the 1999 4.0 ill be swapping in.

I'm pretty new to wheeling, but Ive definatly got the bug. Last October I three linked my XJ and got a little carried away with tubing lol.

I appreciate any feedback on bumpers. Price was something I thought about for a while. I feel like with all the standard features they come with (full frame plates, hardware and crossmember tie ins) As well as primed/painted its competitive.

Again, I'm new to this and this is my first year in buisness, your feedback is whats going to help me get off the ground!

I'm looking forward to designing the ROCKers for the MJ. They are a great addition and fix for a common problem.

Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe,  Welcome to the Comanche world.  One of the things I would be interested in for my Comanche is a heavier duty version of the factory stock step bumper, perhaps with swing a way tire carrier on the drivers side of the truck (better visibility).  So I will be interested in seeing what kind of a rear bumper you come up with.  Care to share your plans or a sketch?

Thanks,

Definatly planning on a rugged rear step bumper. I built a nice one for my XJ and am planning out how Ill do the MJ one.

I plan on using it for my run around truck, so it still needs to have the step aspect.

A swing away tire carrier would be a great idea. Having a short bed space will be precious!

We are burried under about 5' of snow currently, the MJ is under 3' at the moment. Next week ill be dragging it in again to start tearing more into the 97+ interrior swap while I'm waiting for the machine shop to finish the crankshaft.

Ill share a sketch as soon as I have one! Thanks

Should have 2 sets available by the end of this month. We've been getting record snow here in Boston this year, so the plow and repairs have hampered me getting the MJ in here.

With all this interest I will pull it in next week and button up the design.

My plans are to have the ROCKer go all the way to the end of the cab, then cap with a plate to the "outrigger" that runs to the uni-frame.

The slider (pipe) will continue under the bed and then turn back into the frame before the tire. This will provide the protection and stregth to keep things off the rocks and still allow the bed to be removed.

Thanks for the interest guys!

I will take a ton of before/during/after pictures.

Really got my wheels turning on the rear bumper design now.

One thing I'm not 100% on is wheather drop down, or swing out is a better spare tire setup.

Thoughts?

IMO, for the price, the quality isn't quite there... Some of the cut edges are jagged and uneven. And some of the welds look crooked and put of place and the starts and stops aren't as clean as they could be.

I'm just picky when it comes to me spending that much money. Thats why I build stuff myself. That way if it's not perfect, I don't have a lot in it and it's my fault.

I like the looks and design though. Good start. Hope to see more.

here's a shot after one gets hit with the flap wheel and all the holes get chamfered. The pictures in the post were during the process

As for the welds, phew, tough crowd!

I do aggree that the price is too high though. Kinda hard for a market that consists mainly of high shoolers to spend about 1/3 what their jeep is worth on a front bumper. I was considering eating the shipping for this first batch just to see what happens. I'm trying to get UPS to ship these, then I shipping wouldnt be so crazy.

Swing out tire carrier only for me. Drop down carrier makes using the tail gate a big chore. And I would want the tire behind the driver, not centered on the tail gate. Why? So I can see what is behind in my rear view mirror.

Good call on the offset.

Good feedback on the carrier. The offset mounting makes good sence to me.

What if it also doubled as a tailgate? Just thinking outloud.

For an off-roader replacing the tailgate would work. But I am honestly unsure if it would provide better sales potential. We are a relatively small market anyway and it is further divided among wheelers, posers, and those who use their truck as a truck. One that does not replace the tailgate may have broader appeal.

Update on the MJ ROCKers,

I planned on using a set of XJ ones to build my prototype, but I've sold out of all my kits.

Its good and bad, good to move the stuff, but bad because now its delaying a new offering.

My guy who does the CNC bending will have more sets for me the beggining of the 2nd week in March.

Very excited to get going on the build, My friends and I are planning a wheeling / camping trip in June to the North Maine Woods. It would be very nice to have all that bed space to fit my gear!
