Bobolink
For those of you who've done the door swap from the '97 4 dr Cherokee .... I have a '90 Pioneer, hockey stick shaped armrests, molded storage compartments on the bottom. I'm thinking about picking up a couple '97 doors locally. Does my '90 interior door panel fit onto the '97 door, or do I have to do something else to match the color of the other interior trim/upholstery? dave92cherokee
Interior panels are different just like the windows and striker/latch. It takes a little modifying to get a 97+ door to work on a 96- jeep so don't think it's just a bolt in mod.
Bobolink
I'm aware of the modifications to the latch and such. And it's not 97+ doors I'm referring to; it's 97 only. 98 and up have different hinges and I'm not interested in tackling a different hinge. All that's required on the 97 door is to replace the old single stud striker with the 97 "D" shaped striker in a lower position. All I want to know from those who have done this before is if the 90 interior panel will fit over the 97 inner door sheet metal, or if anyone has even tried it. I realize also that there are different switch arrangements on the panels to consider.
dave92cherokee
The inside of the doors are different I have the 93 quad cab and a 97 xj. Holes for clips and arm rests are in different positions between the two. And 98+ may have different hinges but the hinges can be unbolted from the door and the older hinges bolted back in place. shelbyluvv
The hinges are different but they are welded to the body. The way the bolt to the door is the same. You can bolt a 2001 door on a 1986 truck. The only mod needed it to bolt the newer style striker on.
Bobolink
Okay...thanks y'all. I didn't think about the holes for armrest support, etc. Makes sense. My interior's a light tan, and I was trying to decide how I'll match the colors.
Strokermjcomanche
I think Some 97+ xjs have tan interior , I would try to find those interior panels .
dave92cherokee
Matching the color is easy, just get everything and do a full 97+ swap. And yes some did come with a tan color but it's different enough that it could be noticeable and a problem for some.
johnj92131
Okay...thanks y'all. I didn't think about the holes for armrest support, etc. Makes sense. My interior's a light tan, and I was trying to decide how I'll match the colors. I had wanted to do this several years ago. Even looked at the doors side by side and tried to fit the door cards. As I recall, even IF all the holes were not a problem (and they are), I think even the area by the mirrors are different on the door cards. I had figured out how to solve all the holes so I could use the early door cards when I spotted the problem with the door cards near the mirrors. That is when I dropped the idea. edit is: "IF" added to second line Edited October 26, 2014 by johnj92131
TheDude
Yeah, this is what's keeping me from doing this swap. I can't get rid of my sweet black door panels.
