Rough Idle/driving Only When Cold

Recommended Posts

Thanks in advance for reading

So when starting my mj it will not start unless I turn the ignition with a little gas. But It'll start everytime like this. Without gas it will just crank and crank. Now after starting it with gas, if I let off the gas the engine will idle REALLY rough and cut out shortly afterwards. I have to maintain a little gas while in park starting from cold like this to keep it running. When it begins to warm up it will idle really rough but stay on without gas. It will do the same if I go ahead and put it in drive but with the brake on. But once the truck is at normal operating temperatures it runs completely smooth. In park it's as quiet and as smooth as can be.

Is this normal for a old truck like this? Or is there a problem keeping it from running smooth and to start out from cold smooth?

I have considered that it maybe fuel injector, or fuel pressure.? I considered that it maybe a vacuum issue? Or some kind sensor issue? I'm really not sure. I just don't want to throw parts at it when I'm short on money.

I just got over an overheating problem that's been fixed now. This problem has also been an issue since I got it. Just never messed with it because I've had other engine issues and after the engines warm it runs like normal. Now I wanna get my engine to tip top shape.

Any good ideas what it could be?

Yeah an 88 with 2.5. And I was already planning on doing your tips after I fixed my overheating problem. I even printed them out! I will definitely start with that as soon as this awful heat and humidity are gone or I'll just toughen up and go outside a sweat a little bit. I'll also look Into cleaning the throttle body like jeep driver said if there isn't any improvement after that.

I am just confused why it'll run nice and smooth after it's at normal operating temperature and not have the same symptoms on start up

Sensors work off of variable ground. Bad ground, bad info to ECU. Is the bad ground telling the ECU it's warm when it's cold? Get my drift?

It's not normal at all. 88 with 2.5, right?

Great place to begin.

So far I did 1 and 2 and also put a new air filter in today. Having the same symptoms. I don't expect it to be fix right away nor easily I know it'll take some time and process of elimination to get it running like it supposed to.

Being young, inexperienced, and easily frustrated I just get so discouraged with things like this. After solving one issue and then going to next and the next and pouring most of my minuscule paychecks into and spending so much time it gets frustrating I must say.

I need a bud to help me in person lol and also a side by side comparison of a 2.5 to mine cause I have questions about things whether a PO has hooked up things wrong.

Man a lot of us have been in a similar situation. It seems every time I fix one thing I find something else. Part of that is owning an older vehicle (22+ years old). Folks here are super helpful so hang in there! Buy used parts when possible and appropriate.

Yeah I guess I understand why it happens with being an old vehicle.  Its still frustrating but being in love with these kinds of trucks and also the fact that I am young and never worked on cars before I get to use this as a learning experience about working on cars and its all worth the fight.

And thank you so much!

I am a Cruiser disciple.

I recently started getting an intermittent high idle. I could hear Cruiser in the back of my head "#1 Ground Refreshing". Sure enough the IAC ground wire had worked its way out of the terminal crimp at the dipstick stud. Such a simple thing.

Thanks Cruiser!

Where is the IAC?  I cleaned and refreshed the ground at the dipstick.  I'm having a high idle when its been warm its pretty high, but when cold idling is just rough and can barely run, most times itll eventually cut off

The 2.5s don't have an iac...they have a idle speed controller

When mine was causing an high idle it was because the isc was worn and couldn't bring back the idle so I replaced it....

If you plan to get a new one after all the options above does not help here are the part #s

Jeep p/n 83502375, Aftermarket manufacturers p/n 17079129. Fits 100s of Chrysler and GM vehicles.
