Rear End Lift

Hello all. As my MJ build progresses, I've come to the point where I would like some more lift for the rear end. Currently, I'm running 2-2.5 inches of lift in the front (am thinking of adding another inch). In the rear, I'm still running the stock 2wd SporTruck leaves. Now, what I would like out of this vehicle is kind of a jack of all trades. The MJ will be my main camping/lomg range camping/expedition vehicle as well as being able to be driven on a daily basis, have the ability to haul a decent load, AND still be able to keep up (somewhat) with my ZJ in the high speed desert tracks we often wheel out here. Right now, I have Rancho springs in the front and SkyJacker Hydro 5000 shocks all around. They work very, very well for what I want right now, I would just like to stop my 31's rubbing my flares when turning in reverse, and need to stop dragging my hitch when crossing through ditches.

 

I've looked at General Spring and Hell Creek. My question is, which would be better for my needs, the HC 3" lift pack, or the General Sprin Metric Ton pack combined with some good quality shackles? Thanks in advance for all of your help!

I have the same question as the OP, if money is not an issue, is there a "hands down" best quality rear leaf pack for a 3" lift?  I just bought my first MJ this morning (88 4WD, Auto, 4.0) and mistakenly believed I could just go to my favorite vendor (DPG Offroad) and just order a complete 3" Old Man Emu lift for it like I did my XJ's but he said OME didn't make a complete spring pack for the MJ.

I wish OME made leaves for MJ's!! I have a full set of their coils on my ZJ and they're fantastic. 90mph in the dunes feels verg, very stable with OME springs. So... I measured my front end today. It seems that the springs I have on the front have lifted my vehicle a bit OVER 3 inches, despite bei g advertised as 2.5". I think they were meant for a heavuer 4.0 equipped XJ vs my flyweight 2.5 MJ. I'm keeping the front end as-is, probably just going to get adjustable arms to kick my front axle forward a bit (it only rubs at the trailing edge of the flare). With that said, would you guys recommend the HC 3" packs, or just go with the General Springs Metric ton set?

The HC 3" was not an option when I ordered Metic tons from Joe at General Springs. You should expect some lift over your stocker but may not quite get 'a bit OVER 3 inches' to match the front. That question aside, they are really sweet heavy duty springs and come with the Military Wrap. I thought they were a pretty good value for the buck. If your trying to nail 3-4" lift in the back, might be better choice to go HC.

 

There's a JKS adjustable shackle, but they're not cheap. The Chevy drop shackle will probably be too much with the GS MTs. As in 6-7 inches total.

Just got my packs from general springs installed and only got about 2 inch of lift with them.  I have a hardly noticeable rake with my original coils up front, a bit disappointed.  Nothing chevy drop shackle can't fix, I guess.

The OME stuff seems to always give more lift than advertised. I got a full 3" up front with the OME 630 coils, and also 3" with the GS MT springs. This was about 5-6 years ago. The GS MT springs settled about an inch in about a year, then a set of Teraflex greasable shackles brought it back. The OME front coils have not settled at all.

Josh, can you clarify for me?  If you just lifted the rear 2" over stock I would think you would have a very noticeable rake as the stock 88 Comanche I just bought has a significant factory rake to it.  I'm trying to figure out how much to lift the back to end up with a minimal rake when I lift the front 3".  Any input would be appreciated.

I also just had an 8.8 installed (SUA) using the ruff stuff u bolt eliminator kit don't know if that would make a difference, shouldn't. I was surprised when the guy who installed it told me and when I first saw it. Before the rear was really low compared to the front and now it's just a couple inches higher. I really don't think I can get away with 3" coils without making the back (look) lower again, thus installing adjustable shackles or Chevy drop brackets. All I want is 3 inches of lift and then will trim and bump stop accordingly to fit tires. When I bought the packs and talked with Joe at GS he said to expect 2-4 inches of lift, guess I got 2 inch springs. Oh and even with new shocks they are really soft, the flex is amazing

Thanks Josh, that makes sense now.  I just bought my first Comanche, a bone stock 88 on Wednesday evening and I want to lift it 3" in front and only bring the back up until I have just a slight rake.  I'm thinking those 2" GS leafs would be perfect because I would estimate it's sitting with about a 1.5" factory rake now.  That would leave me with a 1/2" rake if I did my math right which would be just about what I'm looking for.  Do you mind sharing what you paid for your GS leafs and a part # if you have it?

I bought them last February with the first group buy and paid 370 with shipping. I only saved the confirmation email so I don't know the part #. Call and talk to Joe tell him what you want and he'll hook you up
