Rear Brake Lines Setup

Recommended Posts

Hello, fellow Comanche owners! My name is Zak and my online name is Cupid. I've been a member here at CC since 2012 but I've never posted.

I've recently begun working on my rear drum brakes on my 1991 Comanche and I have a few questions about the layout of the brake lines and what they do.

It's easier asked with pictures. So I'll let the pictures do most of the talking.

So below we see my rear axle and on the rear axle is some sort of junction for the brake lines. Please correct me with what it's called.

The left and right brake lines have been removed since they need to be replaced. the bottom hose is the incoming brake fluid I'm assuming. It's a normal brake hose. Nice and stiff. What I would like to know is what is that hose coming out from the top? It seems to be going directly into the frame of my truck and I have no idea why.

I have a picture of that, too.

Here is a picture of the soft very pliable hose going from the top if that ?junction? directly into my frame.

Please help me here. What does that hose do? I'll have a few other questions, too I'm sure.

Thanks in advance everyone! I've owned my Comanche since 2007.

The rubber hose going up to the frame is the axle vent - it relieves axle pressure. Carefully pull the plastic hose adapter out of the frame blow through it; make sure it's clear all the way through. If it's clogged you will probably leak diff fluid out the axle seals.

Wherever it enters (should just be a plate or bracket) look on the other side and there should be a clip to release the hose.

Ah! ok. that makes more sense. I guess I was confused since it was attached to the same thing the brake lines are attached to so I thought it had something to do with brakes.

Thanks a lot, guys!

But you are missing both hard lines to the left and rear drums of the rear axle

I am aware of that. I think I mentioned that I removed them because I'm replacing them.

Anyway thanks! Seems like you guys have a good community here.

The plastic hose adapter should be just a press fit into the frame hole, similar to the below:

Lol. You posted that pic in another thread a year or so ago regarding the AW4 90* vent fitting.
