Trujillo107 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I just bought a 90 2wd comanche 4.0l. I'm putting in a new clutch and flywheel in but the flywheel that autozone and advanced auto has doesn't work. They look very close but the bolt pattern doesn't line up. My next solution was to get the flywheel turned but the only place near me that still machines auto parts won't be able to do it for 5 weeks. Does anyone know where I can get a flywheel or the correct part number for one of the auto parts stores. Oh and I'm not sure which tranny I have. It's a manual 5 speed but I know there was a couple variants for that year just not sure which. If someone could tell me where to look or how to find out, that would be greatly appreciated to. Thanks. TJ.
Jeep Driver Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Which store and which part number do you have for the one that does not fit?
Trujillo107 Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 The one I bought was from auto zone and the part number was FW91004.
Jeep Driver Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/1991-Jeep-Comanche-2WD/Flywheel-Manual-Transmission/_/N-itxeiZ6o2oa?filterByKeyWord=fly+wheel&fromString=search 91 was a change......if you have a late production 90 you have need the 91 fly wheel.
Trujillo107 Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 Damn, I didn't even think about that! The man info sticker is missing but I'm gonna head there ASAP to check it out. I'll report back with the results, thanks again!
danbyrambler Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Good luck with AZ - - JIC you try the FW91008 you can also get free 2 day shipping with the trial offer & the $25 gift card rebate (SALE25 Promo Code) - Card takes about 2 weeks to arrive -
Trujillo107 Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 Thanks I had to order it from the hub store. Here's another question, what are the teeth on the inner plate for. I know the outer plate teeth are for the starter. If the bolt pattern lines up the only difference will be the teeth on the inner plate.
Trujillo107 Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 Ok then the inner teeth have to match as well or I'll have a misfiring problem, right? Or am I over thinking this?

Trujillo107 Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 Ok guess I'm gonna have to make the drive and get the original turned.
nitroxsteve Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I believe the flywheel will only bolt on in one position. Did you try spinning it around to the next hole until you tried all the positions?

JeepcoMJ Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Also, if i The title says 1990, DO NOT put a 91 flywheel on. It will not even attempt to start. Your issue is that you are aligning the flywheel improperly

Trujillo107 Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 I tried spinning the new flywheel and all but 1 bolt would thread, it close but no dice. I got the original turned today and everything is going back together without a problem, thanks for all the help guys!
Tactical Bacon Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Why not lay the new one on top of the old one and line the bolts up that way? I mean, to me it just makes sense to compare new parts and old parts side by side when you can.
JeepcoMJ Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 The flywheels are concave, so a straight machine job could give you a problematic clutch when you put miles on it.
cruiser54 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 The flywheels are concave, so a straight machine job could give you a problematic clutch when you put miles on it. Supposedly that's an issue but I've never experienced it. we resurfaced flywheels at the dealership all the time.
JeepcoMJ Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I have experienced slip after as little as 3000 miles on resurfaced 4.0 flywheels. Swapped flywheel with used, clutch still looked new, solved issue
