Comfort Features

Recommended Posts

I have an 89 pioneer that I'm in the process of restoring and I plan on adding some "goodies" to it. I'm trying to keep everything to most factory options. I also have an eliminator (not sure of the year) that it going to be a trail truck. Is there any real difference in the comfort features that I could rob off the eliminator to add to the pioneer? I know some late models came with the headlight delay and door buzzer and such. That's more the things I'm looking for.

I'm not sure what year the eliminator is. Basically what I'm asking is what would the eliminator have that the pioneer wouldn't? I'm not sure of the year because there is no title and the inspection tag wore off. I was told it was a 90 but according to a build reference sheet they didn't make 4x4 eliminators in 90.

Headlight delay and lights-on buzzer were options in all years. My '88 Cherokee had both, but I don't recall if they were part of the Pioneer package or if they were ordered separately. Ditto for intermittent wipers.

The Eliminator got bucket seats, full center console, tinted glass, and sliding rear window. I think it also got "manual remote" side mirrors, where the Pioneer and even the Chief had side mirrors that didn't have the joystick adjusters.

I believe the Eliminator also had under-dash (footwell) courtesy lights. This Pioneer and Chief did not.

I personally think you're going the wrong direction, restoring the Pioneer and turning the Eliminator into a trail rig, given that the Eliminator is the more collectible one, but they're your vehicles.

Maybe it's because it's a '91 and things got a little fuzzy then, but my Pioneer has literally all of those things, except Eliminator buckets. It's just got regular vinyl buckets..

As I understand it, the Eliminator package put the 4.0L as standard (Pioneers could have the 2.5L), the specific (embroidered) bucket seats Eagle mentioned, specific wheels, and stickers on the sides. There are some other things, too, like before '91 you couldn't get them in very many colours or 4x4. But it was mostly an appearance package.

The Eliminator apparently doesn't have a VIN Tag to cross-reference or he could decode it to find out what it is. There is no title and apparently no way to get one. Personally I would not spend a dime on it as if it is ever checked it can be seized and crushed for not having a VIN. There are hidden VIN's but just having the dash VIN missing is reason enough to crush it. That is certainly true in Ohio and probably true everywhere in the U.S., as well. Sometimes even vehicles on trailers get the VIN check during a traffic stop or the rare but still possible roadside inspection in Ohio.

BoardmanMJ: if there IS a VIN tag you could submit it to Chrysler to have it decoded or use one of the many decoder sites on the net to do so. http://www.jeepz.com/forum/vin.php  The year info is available in several places: Emission sticker under the hood, tire safety info in the door jamb, and by the VIN are the most visible/ If all of these are magically missing or obscured the red flags are huge.

If the truck has the VIN tag you could go about obtaining a title. I know a bunch of people turn possibly stolen but certainly illegal unregisterable rigs into trail-only vehicles because of such issues but that will not stop you from getting popped for receiving stolen property should it ever be discovered that it is stolen. What the value of a vehicle is to a person that makes them risk a felony charge is for them to determine. Even if it isn't stolen having possession of a vehicle  in Ohio for which you cannot prove ownership even on private property can certainly cost you the vehicle if nothing else. And on a roadway in transit is not on private property even if towed. Again, only you can judge the acceptable risk of investing money or possessing such a truck.

The reason I'm going to make the eliminator a trail rig is because it's way beyond repair. The bed, cab corners, rockers, tailgate, doors, fenders, everything is a rusted mess. The PO literally hacked the wiring harness and yanked the engine out for some reason. I would love to restore it but it's just way too far gone for my abilities. The pioneer is in way better shape.

As I've been reading on here power windows/ locks seem to be a rare thing on Comanches but (memory is a little fuzzy) it has power windows/ locks and the adjustable mirrors with the joystick. It's grey interior with a mini console and bucket seats. Cargo light and rear sliding window. I'll take some pictures today if you guys would like to see it.

Bucket seats with a mini console? Doesn't sound original, but in the AMC days there was virtually nothing that was impossible.

My '88 MJ is a Chief, which was one level above Pioneer. It has a grey fabric bench seat. It had to have had a mini console when new, but the previous owner had hacked the floor and there was no console when I got it. Mine also has dual side mirrors without the joysticks.

The only thing I got with the truck was a bill if sale. It was an out of state purchase (bought it in PA) and I knew I was going to be a trailer queen trail rig so I really wasn't too worried about it but knowing what I know now I'm alittle worried about having it seized. I just checked now and some things don't seem to add up to me. It does have bucket seats with a mini console. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that there ever was a full console but I could be wrong. The PO owner either used it as a farm truck or hauled hay in the cab cause it's EVERYWHERE! It also has power locks but not power windows? No joystick on the mirror either. Could this thing be a late model 90 or is just a hodgepodge mess?

Other options you could seek out are the dash clock, or dash diagnostic/ warning light THING ( same location as clock), chrome trim, body painted fender flares, roll bar, add AC, add PS if it doesnt have it, add power mirrors, woodgrain dash trim, full console, floor lights, upgraded factory radio, cig lighter, fog lights, full time 4 wheel drive transfer case, non disco front axle, better gearing, dana 44 rear axle, metric tonne springs, limited slip diffs. These are all just factory option upgrades, Ive done several myself. I started out with a base model 2wd 4spd, rear bumper delete, radio delete, power steering delete, no AC, non vent wing, 2.5 Sportruck. Ive added PS, AC, PL, PW, vent wings, clock, radio, chrome bumpers (XJ rear with custom brackets), Wagoneer grille, 5 spd, 4wd, 4 :10 gearing, Limited lace style wheels (now JK Moab wheels), JK shocks front and rear, added electric fan conversion and Flowmaster muffler. Theres a lot of stuff you can do by getting bolt on options from XJ's. Some of the wiring for these options is already in the truck too, just isnt used. Good luck on your project.

The pioneer already has the d44 in the rear with AC, PS. It's an 4.0 with auto trans 2wd. I'd like to keep it 2wd cause I'm not going to drive it in the winter. I have a cargo light to add with a "Comanche" bedliner and a roll bar ( anyone know if the roll bar with block the cargo light?) I grabbed a wood dash from an XJ and I also got a maroon (the my interior color) overhead dome light with the map lights and an XJ sound bar. I also have monogrammed maroon floor mats ( found them in an XJ at the junkyard) it already has intermittent wipers too. I like the idea of the door buzzer and headlight delay and possibly the footwell lights too. Anybody know how to add such features?

I pulled the door buzzer module out on mine a week after I bought it because it was irritating as all get out, but to each their own.

Foot well lights as above, they go on the outer edges of the lower dash panel like so:

As far as the headlight delay goes, I understand it to be called the "Headlight Sentinel" or something like that. I'm told it goes under the dash on the driver's side, near the headlight switch, but I can't confirm that.
