I blew a front whel bearing and it destroyed the spindle. I can't seem to find where to buy one. I was thinking of going to the JY to get a 4wd front knuckle and use a fresh 4WD hub and brake rotor. Will this work?

Time to make it 4wd!!! If you put a 4wd axle in you'll have more rotating mass / weight probly will hurt you're gas mileage slightly . If you wanna make it 4wd in the future make sure you get the same ratio front axle

Junk yard . Depending where you live if you're down south I would think most are gonna be 2wd anyhow I have a 2wd that I'm converting to 4wd I'd sell it to you but it won't be till summer . I'm sure you can't wait so post in the wanteds here

Knuckle won't interchange.

Swap the whole axle.

Why wouldn't the knuckle interchange? The inner "C's" are the same as what's on a D30.....

Later 2wd axles used unit bearings with stub shafts.......particularly 2wd Cherokees with ABS.

:dunno:

Comanchemodder: I have a 2wd axle with good spindles. PM me and we can discuss getting one to ya.

Brake calipers are different........it's completely different.

If he wants a 2W axle he needs to find a later model 2W with the unit bearings.

2wd XJ's and MJ's made after February of 1992 will have the 4wd style outer knuckles.

The spindle type knuckles use pre 1990 style brakes.

But, won't post 1990 style knuckles bolt up to a pre 1990 Dana 30 inner C?

Going to have to buy calipers and rotors anyways just replace both sides.

It is nice driving with the 2wd front end, lighter steering and smaller turning radius.

I found a couple on car-part.  I called and the JY owner said its "just the spindle" when asked if it was a knuckle assembly.  Can a spindle be re-pressed into my knuckle?  I have a monster arbor press to do it, but I guess I am not sure if a good fit can be maintained if a used spindle was removed from an old knuckle and then get pressed again.

Yellaheep:  PM sent

Right, so to be sure that everyone is clear........ the knuckles will interchange, it's the brake calipers that will not.

That bit I was fully aware of when I posted.

Comanchemodder:  PM received, lemme know if and when you want it.

I was a the JY at lunch.  I picked up the 2WD spindle.  Turns out it was a stub-shaft knuckle assembly from the later years.  I bought it and let you know how it installs this weekend.

Spindle replaced with '93+ XJ 2WD knuckle assembly (hub with stubshaft).

The knuckle bolted right into the 2WD inner C.

However, new equipment needed:

1) New brake rotor

2) New caliper (the mounting screw threads are different on the bracket)

3) New pads (to fit new caliper)

I think you'll have to do the other side the same way................

And let's make it abundantly clear. A unit bearing in a jeep is designed as such that it MUST have a stub shaft bolted through the center, because they will not hold together without it. People have died without those stub shafts in the unit bearing.

2wd stub shafts are basically 4wd outer without the ears. You could buy outers and have your local machinist put them on a lathe to turn the ears off and keep it round. And balanced.

But it's easier to swap an axle than deal with ball joints.

Get one from a 4x4, buy 4wd stub shaft, have machinist turn it down. Much easier than looking everywhere for something hard to find. Should cost under $70 in machining.

Make sure you know the year of the donor vehicle as there are several breaks in unit bearing dimensions and therefore brake rotor and calipers.
