Need Some Help And Fresh Ideas

So I got an annoying problem I've had forever but thought I'd fixed until today :yes: My 88 has "always" had the problem of dying when stopping, basically dying off while I'm braking and being completely dead when I come to a stop. Since I got it been looking into this and finally got results by changing to a new TPS. That was about 5 months ago, it's never stopped again 'til today. First idea was the 20 dollar TPS from Ebay simple failed. But since I live and have my garage on an island it can be a hassle ferrying my cars over here to examine, so before you ask I have not measured it yet. My nearby parts-shop wanted 250 dollars for an OEM equivalent TPS. Anything obvious I'm missing here besides a possibly bad TPS?

 

So next question.. Other than my first issue I've been having some rare, happens once in maybe 30 times I try to start the truck, starter issues. I turn the key and all I get is a loud "electrical" noise, a sharp buss I suppose. Had the truck at the garage a month ago to have a look and found the solenoid on the starter sitting there but just barely hanging on with no screws. Since i had a new starter laying at home, changed it and worked great, no starting issues until today. Is there a possible connection between the two? Seems unlikely to me but need some fresh ideas here. Have checked for any shorts but nothing obvious. Do have a mild oil leak occasionally splashing on the starter however.

 

Long post but been having these $#!&ty and rather annoying reliability issues off and on for a while now and with this setback I feel out of good ideas myself :wall:

The buzzing you refer to is generally associated with a bad battery or connections to it (if it's the same loud rapid rapping sound I'm thinking of).

Check the battery cables and ends, clean the connections, and test the battery (how old is it?). A failing battery will cause a number of issues on a fuel injected system.

 

Sounds like either the battery is going, the cable/connextions are gummed, or the alternator is failing (should be putting 13.5-14.5V to the battery when running).

Start with the cheap fixes ... clean and test.

I agree about checking battery cables and grounds. Ive had and seen this issue a few times. Mine did this after I bought it, it would sometimes just not want to crank, but the dash lights and stuff would come on. I cleaned the battery terminals and cable ends and that was that. Ive also seen the ground cable go bad going from the battery to the side of the engine block. I don't think these would cause a stall issue when coming to a stop. I'm not sure if the AW4 has a lockup converter in it or not, but Ive seen on other vehicles if the converter doesnt come out of lockup, it will stall the engine coming to a stop.

As others have said, check the battery terminals.  Verify that the clamps on the post are tight and look for heavy corrosion.  Also, verify the cables themselves have a solid connection to the terminals.  Verify that the negative cable is making a good connection to the engine block.  If corrosion and/or crude/grease/oil is saturating any part of the cable or terminal ends, then clean them really well.  Baking soda and water work really well on the battery side of things and a good electrical contact cleaner and/or brake cleaner works well on the engine side of things.  The negative cable should attach to a stud on the side of the engine close to the oil dipstick tube.

Battery is barely a year, same thing with the alternator, both were dead when I picked her up. Alternator charging great, checked when she was in the garage. The cables from the bat along with the engine block-ground I've just fanned an eye over, will go through them more thoroughly!
