ok I'm planning on converting my 92 mj from 2x4 to 4x4, and was wondering how hard it would be to swap to automatic while I'm at it? and what all would be needed?

Look for a donor with and automatic.

AX5? you have a 2.5?

You also need to buy a heavy duty trailer.......you'll need something to haul around all that regret.

Buy a complete donor and park it beside the MJ. Save many trips running back and forth tween the house and JY. The rear drive shaft will need modified. Everything else will be a unbolt, move, bolt back up.

The 2.5 auto is rare. I've seen one for sale in nearly three years that I've been watching.

I doubt you'll find one, but if you do, get a WHOLE donor and work your way through it, you'll know what goes and what does not.

Further, if you do find one, the rear will not match the gear in yours.....so you'll want to find a 4.10 D30.

Chances are you'll find a XJ before you'll find an MJ.....2.5 auto.

You'll need a drive shaft too......I'm sure of it.....

You'd be better off with a 94 XJ as a donor with an AX5.

Use searchtempest.com

No 88 2.5s of any kind in a 400 mile radius of me.

They are not easy to find.

2.5 2WD are far more common.

You want a 2.5 4X auto...........needle in a haystack.

Only 2.5 autos I've seen for sale are 85-88s.......I've not seen a 90+........doesn't mean they are not out there, just never seen one.

no extra wires, or anything?

Neutral safety switch and the auto shifter and passing gear linkage. Too bad there is no hookup to put a 700R4 from an S10 with 2.8L or 3.2? The matchup between the XJ flexplate and 2.5L crank is the question. '87 up 2.8L-3.4L V6s are zero balanced like the 2.5L which are unlike the earlier 2.8 that is externally balanced. I don't know if the flexplate from the V6 would bolt to the 2.5L crank or how you could put the 2.5L tone ring on it to run the EFI.

Perhaps the 2.5L Renix flexplate is the correct offset to fit the 700R4 converter with new holes drilled to bolt it up?Too many I don't knows there for me.
