tprman
What's the best way to wire a Warn 9000I winch. I have it wired to the battery. Every time I use my winch it pulls to much power from my battery and I have to stop so it can recharge the battery back up. I'm worry I will burn up my vehicles wiring harness. Any ideals. Jeep Driver
Sounds like you need a 200amp alt and a dual battery system........self recovery. I cannot not find it........but I found a write up on an interesting system some time ago. Recovery battery is separated from the primary battery by a remote starter solenoid, the solenoid is triggered by an oil pressure switch. IOWs, the recovery battery is not connected to the electrical system at all unless the engine is running, that way your recovery will always be charged. You could wire your winch to the recovery battery.......200amp alt to charge both........engine running while using winch.
tprman
Where would you mont another battery at on a MJ. Do they make 200amp alternators for MJ's if so where can you buy one at.

ComancheKid45
Do the 2.5 and the 4.0 use the same alternator? That link only specifies for a 4 cyl.
87Warrior
I would not immediately spend big bucks on two batteries and a high output alternator. It sounds like you need to start with a quality battery and then see what your needs are. I run a Sears Diehard Platinum, but there are others out there. If you want/need more winching power after you bought one battery, at least you have already bought part of a $$$ system.
yxmj
I use ( and most winch manufactures suggest) a deep cycle battery as my auxiliary.....OPTIMA is one brand but there are others out there.....They are usually used in boating applications. If the battery's are hooked in tandem (and are both good batteries) you should easily be able to pull yourself (or someone else) out with just a normal alternator recharging ( You might need to let the motor run and charge up if you are using the winch over and over again)
Blue88Comanche
A few questions, Was the engine running? If it was running, did you rev the engine to help the alt output? What is the CA rating for your battery? (mine is 800-900 CA, smittybilt recommends at least 800 CA) How old is the battery? I was able to make several pulls without any issue with my stock electrical setup.
a4xnut
A good battery is key! I've never run a dual battery setup, though that would be great, and I've done self recovery pulls without the engine running. With carb'd vehicles, sometimes that's needed. The added plus to a 200 amp alternator is you can easily add on-board welding to your capabilities!
Jeep Driver
The 200amp alt provides 105amp at idle........no need to idle up while using winch or other accessories. Dual battery self recovery is really to give yourself a jump.......also if you are using something with a high amp draw you can isolate it to your recovery battery and not draw down your primary, possibly leaving you double stranded.........in a hole and with a dead battery. My take.....if you can afford a $800 winch you can afford a second battery and a high output alt........about $350. Edit: If you can afford a $500 bumper for a $800 winch..........you should be able to afford to feed your winch.

87Warrior
You must not forget to upgrade ALL of the primary battery cables if you get a higher output alternator. Kelly's WIP is a good place to look. I have never needed a dual battery set up running a Diehard Platinum (rebadged Odyssey) with my Superwinch EPi 9.0 and stock electrical system in my TJ. At idle I can do a full pull (100') with very little strain.
Blue XJ
If it kills your battery, you need a bigger/better battery. Mine is wired directly to my battery and causes no issues.
