Clarification Wanted

Recommended Posts

Many of you who've been following my build thread know that I'm about to start making some serious upgrades to my 91 stock height 2WD. It has not lost any of its ride height over the years. Among other things in the suspension category (ZJ sway bar/tierod, etc) I'd like to put the front up an inch to take some of its ridiculous rake off. So the bed doesn't sag under load I'll be adding load leveling shocks, which add some small lift in the rear as well. My question is this: will stock 4WD springs get me where I want without modifying anything else? I would like to avoid coil spacers if reasonable. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but I want to be completely certain before I touch anything.

I greatly appreciate any thoughts.

Moog PN CC784 will give you about 2.25" lift over stock up front. Moog PN CC782 will give you about an inch. They're the same number for V8 ZJs and 4wd MJs, 782, that is. 784s are the Up Country equivalents.

Don't feel bad.....on a lot of these sites guys like you feel free not to read but to just open someone's wallet....." I would like to avoid coil spacers if reasonable"

MAYBE  HE HAS OTHER BILLS THAT ARE A PRIORITY?????

Here's another question. With an XJ, what rear springs would you use to go with the cc784 coils.

I don't think you will be able to find a brand new leaf packs that will only give you 2". I think 3" is the smallest you can get. You will either have to get an AAL or make your own "bastard pack" or get a longer shackle.

Says those front springs were optional on 86-91 XJ's.

Just wondering what the part numbers were for the matching rear springs.

Probably end up going with a set of Old Man Emu 2.5" springs in the rear.

Good suggestion - did you have an OME P/N for those rear springs? Are they specific to the TJ, MJ or XJ?

I'm looking for XJ springs for my 92 XJ.

My 92 MJ I put Rustys 3.5 XJ spring with the eyes cut off between my overload and main leaves with Chevy drop shackles. Most of the lift I got over stock 2wd springs came from the shackles. 3" overall lift.

They're nearly equal to a metric ton spring though.

The cc784's would work good in that too.

There's a Skyjacker XJ rear spring set - on Amazon its Skyjacker JC25RS 2.5" Softride Leaf Spring and listed for $209.99 free shipping.

But, I thought that MJ rear springs were MJ only, not interchangable with XJ?

So, Zack did you have those General Spings or Hell Creek rear spings in mind when you responded?

No, I did not have them in mind because last I saw, HC only has 3" and 4.5". And metric ton 0" lift was an MJ packs not XJ...Which are not interchangeable. And they still don't have a 2" or less leaf packs..Which is what I think he wanted. Cause if he wants to go 3" then he can pretty much pick whatever brand he wants

Edit: I was talking about and posting back to the guy I quoted not OP

I don't want any spring lift in the rear. The only reason I'm even mentioning a lift at all is my truck has a pretty steep forward rake and I'd like to level it somewhat while using as many OEM-spec parts as possible. The load leveler shocks in the back will add at the very most most a half inch to the back, but their main purpose is to  make the bed sag less when loaded.

I'm very, very picky when it comes to stuff that goes on my truck and I just don't like the idea of coil spacers. It seems to me like a shortcut (even though to most of you it may not) and the whole point of my build is to not take shortcuts. This truck has been in the family since new and since I've taken it in I feel like I have the responsibility to be as meticulous as possible. Nothing against any of you and I appreciate your answers, I'm just explaining myself.

I'd never use spacers either. Recommend going with the Moog 782 coils and be done with it. Or if your want the best, get a set of OME front coils to get your desired lift (more $$) but it will ride and handle much better than the cheaper Moog springs. They lift exactly as advertised, and they never sag.

As much as I'd love to have OME stuff on my truck the smallest spring I see in their catalog gives about 1-3/4 inches of lift over stock. I assume these "stock" values are for a 4wd model - I'm not prepared to do a nearly 3 inch lift on my truck. If the stock values are for a 2wd XJ, then it's bang on, but I'm not sure why they would use a 2wd vehicle as the benchmark for a lift spring. :dunno:

Another thought just hit me: TJ springs are 1" shorter than 4wd XJ springs, and thus are the same length as a stock 2wd MJ spring. OME offers a "2 inch" TJ lift coil. Would this fit my needs? Is there any reason that using a spring meant for a TJ wouldn't work for me? 2 inches is about as high as I'm willing to go in the front.

From their catalog:

OME coils springs generally provide a 1/2 to 3 inch suspension lift......

I used these springs on my 2WD truck. It lifted it about 2" from where it was originally. The amount of lift you get mainly depends on the condition of the coils you are replacing. I also had to install an adjustable track bar to recenter the axle, and pack shims behind the LCA to set the caster angle back to specs.

For the rear I installed new MT springs from General Springs that initially provided 3" of lift, then settled down about 3/4" in about a year.

No sir, I was just wondering, and since you don't have any plans to go to 3"+ here anytime soon, I agree 100% percent with you.

And a 2" TJ lift coil would give you an 1" or less over stock. If it were me, I would get a 3" lift coil if they have one- if you're going that route...that way it would net you 2" or less over stock.

When I was trying to figure out how much I wanted to lift my Cherokee- I measured from the ground to the top of the bumper (for example say it's 20"). I then added how much I wanted to lift my Cherokee (lets say 4"). Then I jacked up the passenger side till I got to 24" (the stock height plus the 4"), put that side on a jack stand and I jacked up the other side 4" (till the bumper was at 24" all the way across- more or less). That gave me a general idea of what the ride height for my Cherokee was going to be. I think this would work great for you, so you could compare the body lines down the truck and you could see how much lift you really want.

Edit: Just fyi for everyone I stand corrected here is 0" lift XJ leafs

That's where I'm hung up - is a TJ coil 1" shorter relative to a 4WD or a 2WD vehicle? There's an inch of difference there and I'm just assuming that they're comparing based on a 4WD XJ. If a 2" TJ lift coil is indeed 1" shorter than a 4WD XJ coil, then it would be a 2" lift coil to me as well, whereas to a 4WD XJ or MJ it would only be a 1" lift coil. But I'm not sure if that IS the case.

I'm planning on doing this a couple of months from now, so there's plenty of time to research my options but I want to be perfectly clear before I start emptying my wallet.

Thanks for the advice - I was planning on jacking up the body and seeing how it looked as well.

@ Hornbrod: From what you're saying, the OME coil will lift a 2WD 2" as well? When I measured the ride height from the frame rail (based on instructions on this forum) my ride height was exactly where the page said it would be. That leads me to believe my coil springs are in good shape as-is.
