13 Legion Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Greetings all. Just got back from my 2wk National Guard annual training. Spotted two Comanches down in Southern Indiana. One red, looked to be 87, in North Vernon,it was at a business so assuming it ran, and another Black LWB at Muscatatuck. My question. I need to swap out my steering gearbox. I have an 87 2.5 4spd. What donor vehicle can I snag one from at the boneyard? What do I need to look for? Does eng matter(if its from a 4.0)? Thx.
Jeep Driver Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Having not done it myself.......but I have read here that guys swap from XJs to Grands to Dakotas to aftermarkets. I think you have a wide birth of choices.
mnkyboy Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Mine with the 2.5l 4 spd had manual steering, the box was fairly expensive and hard to find. I ended up swapping a power steering setup onto my 2.5l using a steering box from a 4.0l XJ, it bolted right up so any option for a 4.0l rig should work for you aswell.
randomguy310 Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 they should just be a Saginaw box.. gm style.. they say that IROC Camaro boxes have a faster ratio
Zebvance Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I have a 99 Durango box in mine. Direct bolt up but much larger, you gain strength with it but lose a bit of turning radius...
gogmorgo Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 they should just be a Saginaw box.. gm style.. they say that IROC Camaro boxes have a faster ratio The IROC got a 12.7:1 ratio, same as the ZJ, which would likely be a better swap.
dasbulliwagen Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Mine also had no P/S from the factory, I swapped a set in from an 86 2.8 setup, just had to get engine specific pump and lines.
mnkyboy Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I originally swapped on a 2.5l pump, currently I have one off a 4.0l XJ on my 2.5l. Bolted right up.
