Trujillo107
I recently bought a 90 comanche 2wd. And my mom just wreck my 2000 Cherokee. Can I use the Cherokee 4x4 parts; tranny, axles, etc to convert my comanche to 4x4? Please help the insurance company needs and answer for buy back ASAP! 87MJTIM
Depends on the engine in each one. If the 90 (Renix) is a 2.5 and the '00 (HO) is a 4.0, then the trans may not fit. Also, are they both autos or manuals. Can you give us more info on both Jeeps?
Jeep Driver
How much is the salvage price?
Trujillo107
Both are 4.0L but the comanche is manual and the Cherokee is auto. And I'm not sure of the salvage price, I was gonna ask that but my last car which was a total loss was $800 for the by back price and that car was $7k. Since the MJ in set for 2wd, it will not take the tcase to go 4wd. Or, you will need an AX15 from a 4wd jeep. To go 4wd, you will need to shorten the rear drive axle to fit for the tcase. The XJ shaft will not fit the MJ. I believe (correct me if Iam wrong) the front axle will bolt in to the MJ. You can use the front drive shaft from the XJ on the MJ. They are the same length. Trujillo107
So do you guys thing it be worth it (time/money wise) to buy back the Cherokee and put the work it to make my truck 4x4?! Or just find a 4x4 comanche to get parts off of?
87MJTIM
Find out the salvage price. Compare that with the cost of buying all the parts to do a 2wd to 4wd conversion. You may find it to be less to buy back the XJ. You need to do the math.

You need to post a pic of it for us to judge by. My quick answer for you is no, don't bother. Unless you can pick it up for $300, it's worth about $450 in scrap. Have you got a way to haul it around? or will you pay towing? Is it at your house? Some insurance companies will total a car that is NOT totaled just because it's cheaper to do so than repair. My wife's 97 XJ is a perfect example of that, previous owner fought the insurance company to repair it. Your best option in my opinion is to find a like year XJ with a 5 speed and do a direct swap, pick one up with a blown engine for $500 and scrap it for $400, you get your drive line for about $100 excluding new parts that you wish to replace or upgrade. nitroxsteve
This is not the best donor for your truck. The front axle is low pinion while that will work its not the most desirable. I don't know what it would take to make the transmission work in your truck but if you can't make it work the trans, tcase, front drive shaft, and shifter will be useless. You may be able to find a transmission to use with this t-case but you can buy a good t-case for less than $100.00 about anywhere.
87manche1
U need to use a renix flywheel the 2000 has different timing marks. And u need the tans module and wiring its worth it but ull need allot. Anx the rear driveshaft will need shortened or find one the correct length. Trujillo107
Thanks guys! The Cherokee isn't totaled it just needs a lot of work that surpasses the insurance companies standards of repair. From what I can see it needs a fender, hood, entire front end basically. jimoshel
That's repairable. assuming no major frame damage. Check what the P&P wants for individual parts. Then see if you can't find a similiar body.Should be able to pick one up less drive train for $400. Get some of your money back selling what you don't use for scrap. Make a very careful check of the frame for damage. If any, then scrap it.

From what I can see it needs a fender, hood, entire front end basically. Spring and shock tower is gone and I guarantee you the unibody is twisted. Scrap it. If you get it for $400, yeah, maybe, good interior and driveline........rear hatch.....some other parts. Bet thad front axle got some damage too, you'd be surprised what will get bent. carnuck
You can see a bend in the body if you look along the door line. I lay odds the right front corner is accordioned enough a rad won't fit right either. My son's ex-GF did the identical thing (hit a dark colored XJ at night when police were chasing a stolen car and the thief cut her off) I had enough parts to patch it up except a rad.
