reubj Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I would like to replace the small stock side mirrors on my 89 MJ Pioneer with the larger door mount mirrors that were available as a factory option. Unable to find factory mirrors I found these that look somewhat close: http://www.amazon.com/CIPA-41100-Universal-Replacement-Mirror/dp/B00029WSXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388886533&sr=8-1&keywords=cipa+41100#productDetails Has anyone tried these? I beleve I will need to fab interior mounting plates to stiffen the door skin where the mirrors are mounted. Thanks for any help.
87MJTIM Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 If your doors were not originally with the "sport" mirrors, then they may not have the internal bracing for those mirrors. There is an internal metal brace that runs top to botton inside the door. This is to provide additional support from wind against the mirror. You could install those mirrors, but over time, the sheet metal may fatigue and bend.
jimoshel Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I have found a couple doors where the factory had installed the stiffeners but not the mirrors. No way to tell without removing the door panel.
reubj Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 Thanks. I will check the interior of the doors. If there is no stiffener I'll whip something up.
shelbyluvv Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I used a set off a early Ranger on Betty. I do not have the internal braces in the doors. Use fender washers behind the nuts to keep them from pulling through the door. Try to find either a factory set of a set off a Ranger. The fullsize Ford's have bigger mounting arms and look weird on a MJ's short door.
87Warrior Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I have a decent set of mirrors I took off my 92 for the 97+ mirrors. Manual adjust and the black housing is faded some. I should have the plastic interior trim piece in gray as well. If interested I can take a pic then send them to you for the cost of shipping.
