I have 31x10.5s on mine and they fit pretty well. The front coils sag some, so I can't hit some bumps too fast and they rub at full lock, but they fill the wheel well quite nicely. It's a 4.0 HO with an AX15 and stock 3.07 in the rear but I haven't really had any problems getting up and going.

You should have 3.55 differential gears, then. That'll help with the torque multiplication.

I have two MJ'S and a XJ with 31's.One MJ will rub the LCA on a tight turn. The other MJ and XJ has no problem. Never worried about it or checked it but now I'm wondering if the stops might have something to do with it.

Noticeable difference in how far the wheels will turn?

Never noticed any but then I wasn't looking for any. Gonna pay closer attention next time I drive them and see if I can notice any. Also one of the MJ'S is a '86 with the fabled 2.8 and 3:54 gears. Just a bit sluggish of the line but not enough to bother me any. I think 3:73 would be just right for that combination.

I've got 31's on my XJ with 4.10's , AW4 auto and I6.  They turn good with the 4.10's, can even spin them if need be, but I don't since my trans. has 210k miles on it.  I was always told that 31's wouldn't fit on a stock XJ without lift or fender trimming.  Mine rubbed slightly with 3 inches of lift.  How come they fit with no rubbing on an MJ as y'all claim?

Well he could get out there and check his rear gear ratio, but I agree; 3.73 sounds golden.

Well mine rubs on the driver side if I hit a bump too hard and they do rub at full lock. Both of the inner fender wells are gone up front on my MJ. Backspacing may be part of it. My tires are on Canyon wheels 15x8 with 5.5" backspacing.

As far as turning them over, I tried dumping the clutch at about 3k rpm the other day and holy crap! It sounded like I was breaking the world from the way something slammed haha.

31s fit a stock XJ the same as they fit a stock MJ -- slight rubbing on the LCAs at full steering lock. I have 31s on the '88 XJ (on factory rims) and have had no issues (other than the LCA rubbing, which I don't consider to be an "issue") for two-plus years.

The key is that the 31s have to be on factory Jeep rims. No aftermarket rims have 5-1/4" backspacing like the factory rims, so on aftermarket rims the tires sit farther outboard and hit the flares.

That's probably exactly it. Didn't really take that into account until you mentioned it. My XJ has 15" x 8" steelies with 4.00" backspace. Rubbed like a mofo in turns until some slight trimming and added lift.

This is true. I have 31's on Jeep Wrangler rims with Spidertrax spacers and a 3" Rusty's lift. Still rub on flares, left more than right. I can only turn halfway then major rubbing. If I take the front flares off I might be alright but I think I'm going to get Bushwackers as I like the stance of the wheels.

But yes, I learned the hard way that non stock wheels on 31's can rub even with a lift and spacers.

Quite the discussion on 31s. Looks like the thread is having a little struggle staying on topic.

31s will fit without a lift but will rub LCA. More specifically,  1 - Rims must be factory width (7"), diameter (15"), and offset (5 1/4")

                                                                                             2 - Tire size = 31"x10.5" or less

3 - Lower Control Arms need replaced with WJ LCA, or equivalent, to prevent tire rub

Is this an accurate observation?

I think that covers all the bases, though you probably could squeeze another inch of diameter in there. But then again, we don't want to confuse anyone haha.

For clarification on #3 above - add "OR adjust steering stops to avoid minimal tire rub", right?

Hey Kid, there is an incredible amount of confusion on this topic. Jp magazine published a lift/tire fitment chart that presents data which conflicts with what has been established here. I attempted but was unable to copy it to this thread. Perhaps a tech savvy member can accomplish the task? At any rate, the combined real world experience of our contributors is contrary to the publication.

As follows below, I took the liberty of editing your summation for clarity, making some slight changes and adding a couple of questions. Is this indeed the consensus, and can the knowledgeable answer the highlighted questions please?

31s will fit without a lift but will rub LCA. More specifically:

  1. Rims must have factory backset (5 1/4") [***what are the wheel  width limitations? and is there any wheel diameter limitation?]
  2. Tire size = 31"x10.5" or less
  3. Lower Control Arms replaced with WJ LCA or equivalent [***is there any other substitute for the WJ LCA?], OR steering stops adjusted to prevent tire rub

Mine has 15X8 TJ rims.  Gamblers.  Only rubbing on LCA's.

Thought so. "Gamblers" are the factory 5-hole wheels, right? Those are the ones that would be my choice for a 15" wheel... but I would prefer a 16" or 17" wheel (even if only plain steel ones) if available to run 31s without rubbing. Anyone have info on any such options?
