The_Kack Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 not there on startup. stays the same once warmed up. no noise under power.
smpyjmj Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Had a 93 4.0 with a sticky lifter, kinda sounded like this, can of fuel injector cleaner every now and again took care of it, if your lucky its a $2 fix

ComancheKid45 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Very possible it could be a sticking lifter, they like to come and go now and then as well.
The_Kack Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 How could I check for the lifter? Also, I really appreciate all the help guys, I did get an offer on the truck I'd be stupid to not take, but if it's just the lifter, I may be stupid lol. In any event, I will be getting another Comanche at some point if I do sell this one, they're just cool!
cruiser54 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Put a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil into the crankcase and see if it gets better. If you shine a light into the oil filler hole, you can see how much sludge is built up.

A mechanic's stethoscope would be great. http://www.harborfreight.com/mechanics-stethoscope-41966.html

smpyjmj Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Don't know how it worked, not even sure it was a lifter, just what some guy at a gas station told me when i pulled in with it knocking, but whenever it started, the injector cleaner made the noise go away
cruiser54 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Well, injector goes into the combustion chamber. The lifter is in the crankcase. Best to just chalk this up to coincidence.
The_Kack Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 Well, I've put 200 miles on it in the last couple days and I'm going to put another 150-200 on it tomorrow and there's no change so far in sound. Still no idea what this is, which may seem good, but it still makes me nervous (i.e. can break at any moment). Anyone have a line on relatively cheap engines? Or someone in Colorado know a place that has a good price on rebuilds?
carnuck Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Seafoam in the oil can help noisy lifters. Closest thing to injector cleaner working I ever found!
carnuck Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 And that mixes up unknowing original posters. I fixed it.
The_Kack Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 I haven't tried anything yet beings I haven't identified the noise.
