 we are converting 88 mj BA-10 2wd to 4wd , donor 91 xj AX-15/231 TC. Both 4litre engines.  Everything lined up until we got to the crossmember. It doesnt line up with factory frame bolt holes on my 88 mj?

 

Any insight would be appreciated!

The mount is offset if I believe if I remember right. So therefore I don't think it will bolt to the transmission flipped.

not flipped,will only bolt on 1 way to tranny, besides the exhaust hanger is the same on both, passenger side. The bolts are out an inch from factory frame holes.

You're probably having an issue not because the XJ/MJ crossmembers are different (because they aren't), but because the AX-15's crossmember is different from all the other ones.

 

There are also 6 mounting holes in the frame for the crossmember.  You either use the front two and the middle two, or the rear two and the middle two.  I don't remember what the BA 10/5 uses, but the AX-15 definitely uses the middle/rear.

 

How much is it off by? Pics?

II'm going to have a better look underneath hole were out by an inch, there are like you said 6 holes but I'm quite sure none of them lined up, I'll also get some pics together

There were only two factory transmission crossmembers used in 1988 and 1991.
In 1988 the AW4 and BA-10 used the 52002328 crossmember and the AX-15 used the 52003929.
In 1991 the AW4 used the 52002328; the AX-15 the 52003929. The exhaust pipe cutout is always on the right. So it has to be a matter of which set of mounting holes are used.

The 1997 AW4 cross member I installed was exactly the same as the BA5/10 cross member I took off. MOPAR #52002328, the same as Hornbrod posted.

I am also seeing #52003929 for the AX15 all the way up to 2001.

The mj has 2 extra brackets on the inside of the frame to accommodate 4 extra bolts. I found 2 plugged holes on these brackets and looks like I may get 2 bolts on each side, but not in the frame like the xj.

That actually has nothing to do with XJ/MJ.  That's a whenever-the-hell they decided to put them on thing.  My 91 MJ Sportruck with a 2.5 and 4 speed had them.  My 91 MJ Pioneer with a 4.0 and 5 speed did not.

 

I don't remember the specifics, but I've had XJs with and without.

My 91 MJ also has these brackets; eight bolts total on the crossmember.

Both my 87 MJs have them, my 96 XJ does not, and neither my 94 XJ nor a former coworker's 89 XJ had them.

 

I always thought they were an MJ only thing, but I think they will swap over to some years XJs.

Ok now we have that settled, has anyone had any success moving the xj ax 15 cross member over to an mj? My 88 don't like it.

 

Also I hate flicr, anyone got a user friendly photo shop?

It shows it for all manual five speeds for those years with a 4.0L.

The 5-speed NV3550 manual was used in the 00 and 01 XJ. It used the same 52003929 crossmember.

Yea as stated before I have the same prob. Could never fig it out. I took a grinder and oblonged the holes on the transmission mount ( the side that colts to the crossmember to make it work. It was not fun. And I'm about to install serious offroads xj long arm lift on my mj and I know I'm going to run into the Same problems again with nothing lining up right. So this will be fun.

This may be a little off topic but here goes.

A year or so ago I bought a Rough Country long arm kit for my MJ. Mine had the BA/10 tansmission. I could not get the crossmenber to line up. I started making my own trans mount to fit. I finaly gave up and got an AX15. Anyway there are extra holes in the frame on an MJ that need to be tapped, then you can use different crossmember/transmission combinations. I modifided the RC crossmember so I could use the inside frame bolts as well. Also here is a good link on how to make your transfer case linkage work after you have changed transmissions and it does work.

That's exactly what we are doing as well...added a 4.5 rough country to our 2x4 mj with xj donor 4x4. The cross member doesn't line up , but a fab buddy of mine has an idea. we have to drop the cross member 1.5" anyway, so instead of using the provided nylon spacers, he is going to fabricate the !.5" drop and add a skid plate using the existing attachments in the frame and cross member.
