Zebvance
Just installed a stock 2001 cherokee e fan in addition to my mech fan. When I turn it on I get a huge voltage drop. Under 9 volts. The mj almost completely dies from the load on the initial start up. I also am in the process of adding a 40 and 20 inch ligh bar, 2 led spots and two fog lights on the rear bumper. So I need to get a bigger alt ASAP. What are my upgrade options. If I remember right my stock alt only has about 60ish amps. I would like to be above 100 if possible. Also will I need to upgrade wireing? It's going on a 88 renix 4.
AMCJeepMJ
Have you made sure all your underhood grounds including battery cables are clean and free of crud and corrosion? Higher amp alternators (not 200w, but an improvement over 65w): http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/search/?Ntt=4.0+1988+Jeep+Cherokee+Alternator&searchType=global&N=0&submit=

HOrnbrod
Good advice all. ^^^ These 10-blade late model XJ fans can suck up 24A on startup and 9A-15A while running. There's no way a 60A alt can handle this extra load over normal as you have seen. I have two of these fans installed. Did the Jon Kelly mains cable upgrade, installed a larger Group 34 battery and a Dodge V8 136A alt. This is adequate with everything running at night including the H4 head lamps and driving lights, and the blower motor on at HI speed. If I turn on A/C along with everything else, I do have a slight voltage drop. So for me a larger alternator is probably needed. It's very important to upgrade your electrical system capacity to handle at least 100% of the total load w/o a sustained voltage drop. It prevents unwanted smoke tests and/or wire fires. Zebvance
Ok. Ill upgrade the wireing but I will still need more amps. So what alternator is a renix bolt on upgrade?
GirsMJ86
Check the link in the second post, also any search on autozone or rockauto or any other place that sells them will be correct bolt-on replacements for the year you select.
Zebvance
Yes but it will still be the stock output correct? I'm looking for something more
GirsMJ86
Not to sound rude, but you gotta actually go through and look at what all is offered. Zebvance
Ok sorry i just wanted to make sure those were 100% bolt ons. Looks like the highest "affordable" output one is the 100amp for around $70.00 I would really like to be in the 150 amp range but can't afford the $350.00 price tag. I run three electric fans in the dirt bound shroud and have them to start and run all at same time and its just a small power drop at startup .(100amp alt) but it sounds like you have a weak alternator or you need to update all your grounds. and your MJ will work much better after you update the grounds . 64 Cheyenne
This is how I'm going to do it: I was going to do a complete HO swap into the 87, things change, still going to put an HO motor in it but with Renix engine controls. Since the motor is an HO I will be using a Dodge 136A alternator I got from the JY for $50, without the ECU to control it I will be regulating it with this http://alternatorparts.com/external-voltage-regulator-high-output-alternator-kit.html
