jared Posted March 28, 2007 Share Posted March 28, 2007 well here is my xj if you never seen it before and here is most of the stuff i just bought for it. it consists of 6.5'' rustys coils, bar pin eliminators, yellow shock boots, rough country upper adjustable control arms, rough country brakes lines, dropped pitman arm, rustys trackbar bracket. and my harbor frieght airtools that will help in my endeavors. on order are rough country adjustable lower control arms, tnt customs 1.5'' u bolt eliminators, and some other small misc stuff. and here are my rock sliders i had someone make for me, they are modeled after jcr's ones but a fraction of the price. hope you like. and updates will come as i install them Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Oizarod115 Posted March 30, 2007 Share Posted March 30, 2007 i too love the XJ, but drive an MJ. just the same animal, only the manche's cooler :chillin: this is my bro's XJ, RE 4.5coils+2"spacers super30+arb front axle, super44+detroit rear, 4.88s, 4.0l, winch, JCR bumper, NEEDS ROCK RAILS! and the shortarms are killing it, thing loves to teeter and pull a wheel a few feet up in the air. 87manche Posted March 30, 2007 Share Posted March 30, 2007 can you get me some pics of the competition cut he did to the rear quarters? i am very interested in doing that to mine. do he do the cut and fold method, or weld a new piece in? that's a popular cut. most of the XJ guys simple cut and then fold the entire quarter up under the body, then bring the rear bumper forward to protect it, kinda like a mini rock rail back there. jared Posted March 30, 2007 Author Share Posted March 30, 2007 yeah i like the look of the cut and all, but it really drops the resale value by a 1000 or more when you cut them. i am extremly undecided about it now, but i know someday they will be cut. its about 6-7'' rear lift and 4.5-5'' in the front. jared Posted April 7, 2007 Author Share Posted April 7, 2007 so i started to finally work on my jeep. getting the front end all apart was pretty easy took a few hours working slow to do it. i don't have acess to a lift in my garage so a cherry picker works great , along with a couple of jackstands for safety measures. the only problems i have had so far is removeing the pitman arm. i had a pulley puller i was trying to use, but it wouldn't cut it. so i took a trip to harbor frieght and bought one for a pitman arm, hopefully it works. the other thing was trying to connect the control arms with the springs installed with no spring compressor. i did it before on a lift with 2 people and a huge prybar, but i had to cave and spent 13 bucks on a harbor frieght one. it should works fine. all the parts i got look great so far, and just haveing a little trouble on getting the correct control arm lengths. with the lengths i have 15.5'' upper 17'' lower, there is no upward angle on the pinion, but i am assuming the caster is pretty close to factory. everything looks fine on it and there is no binding of the driveshaft u joint or anything. maybe i am worriying over nothing. oh i did have to modify my lower control arm mounts to use the new rough country adjustable arms. they are a straight arm and have no curve like the non adjustables, so at full axle droop they hit the upper part of the shock/coilspring/control arm mount. so a couple minutes with the cut off wheel took care of that. jared Posted April 7, 2007 Author Share Posted April 7, 2007 never buy a harbor freight pitamn puller or spring compressor. they break the first time you use them. i had the coil compressed, and then the crappy style compressor were you tighten and loosen it is a nut with a pin smashed into it. the pin sheared off and it would have came apart on me if i hadn't noticed it. so i had to use the floor jack and wood blocks to jack up the axle and compress the spring enough to safely get the sring compressor off without hurting myself. so i went to autozone and rented there stuff and the pitman arm puller worked great. and the spring compressor is a heavy duty piece that will work great. Just always lubed the threads real well and made sure that both compressors were compressing evenly. jared Posted April 8, 2007 Author Share Posted April 8, 2007 well i set it up fianlly (hopefully) to 17.75 lowers and 16.75 uppers. i have it on the groung now. looks really good. its almost level with the back now. befoe i installed the spring i used the jack to cycle the suspension to check for binding and it it is hanging up on anything. sure enough the uppers were hitting a little bit of the upper/lower/frame mount. so out came the cutoff wheel and i took care of that. my final caster with it on the ground is about 5-5.5 degrees which is a little less than stock, but it should be enough. now at full axle droop my front driveshaft bottoms out, but i don't think it will be a problem because the shocks should limit that somewhat, and i don't really think it will flex that far. jared Posted April 8, 2007 Author Share Posted April 8, 2007 i also got the rustys hd tracbar bracket installed. i am still not sure of it yet, but it seems strong enough. i also bought a grade 8 bolt for the bushing because it only comes with a grade5, adequate probably, but whatever. the pitamn arm is installed, that was a pain to get off. :mad: now for tomorrow i have to torque down all the control arm bolts, put the steering back together, and rough in the alignment. then i am gonna take it outside and test flex it out, and measure for new shocks. then install the shocks that were on it. then take it for a drive and hope all is well. i also got the rough country brakeslines i need to install, but i am unsure of how they go on, its a weird setup. maybe they are the wrong ones. jared Posted April 11, 2007 Author Share Posted April 11, 2007 it still drives really smooth for being a short arm still. it tracks straight with no death wobble or shimmy at all. i don't even have the steering stabilizer on it. the only thing i noticed was a clinking noise from the upper control arms when turning. kinda weird but whatever. and now i need an alignment because my steering wheel is sideways :eek: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I like the look of the new style (redefined) Cherokees lifted (up high). I'm starting to get used to seeing euro taillights in town. jared Posted April 14, 2007 Author Share Posted April 14, 2007 i got a little more done on the heep tonight. i did some front bumper trimming lost the old stock foglights that were broken. looks a lot better. i am gonna sand the bumper down and paint it with cheap spray on bedliner i bought and the same for the grill guard. pics tomorrow i promise. since i trmmed the bumper i didn't want to pull the liners out because mud in the door hinges is not my thing, so i trimmed it up so it doesn't hang down, but its still there doing its job. i got one slider and painted with bedliner ready to mount hopefully tomorrow afternoon. i need to grind and paint the other one still and do some fender trimming also. i might mess around with the alignment because the steering wheel is all out of whack, but it still drives straight. so its still a long list but its getting shorter. pics tomorrow i promise. jared Posted April 14, 2007 Author Share Posted April 14, 2007 oh and i almost forgot the highlight of my night. my dad found my brothers rustys offroad shocks he didn't use when he lifted his jeep. i got all 4 brand new shocks for free WOOT! all i need is the new bushings and to put them on soon. and they are the right lentgh for a 6'' lift because that is what he bought. I DON'T care if it is 'theoretically' strong enough or W/E they maintain (I know they don't engineer their stuff) - for the extra $2 it would have cost why aren't they gr8? It's your bloody suspension, it should be BEEFY! I think many people did what you did and wound up buying their own hardware. Anyways, the XJs looking pretty good. Keep at 'er.
