ridenlow12
Hey guys, I have my first comanche and I was wondering if a 1987 2.5 has enough power to haul a 250cc dirt bike and turn over 31x10.50's?
feerocknok
Auto or manual? My auto on 31s doesn't really have "power," even after the regear, so the any statement on this is kind of an opinion. I did haul a complete set of tools and a front and rear axle in the bed though for about 30 miles, and it didn't feel any worse than it does without hauling all that junk. I don't have any idea how much bikes way but I probably had 350 pounds of extra weight with me. Same as driving around 2 buddies.
carnuck
My '86 longbed with 2.5L, AX5, NP207 and 4.10 axles with 235/75/15 tires had a GVW of 6000 lbs when I headed out for Ouray, CO in '02.
jage
My 86 2.5L 4wd with the AX5 and 3.54 gears and 31" BFG mud TAs took a John Deere riding mower (1974 E112) and deck (detached) like it was nothin. To put it another way, there wasn't any less acceleration with the ~600 lb mower. The proportional valve was working in the back too because stopping was as close to normal as you could hope. DirtyComanche
2.5s don't make power. But they'll haul anything providing you have the patience - and the same for the guys behind you. Personally I can't stand the 2.5 as it is. I'd probably get bored while driving and fall asleep.
Kenosha Warrior
the novelty of mine has worn off, its being swapped into a Cherokee, whose 4.0L/BA-10/231 and axles are heading into the MJ. its a good motor for a DD, past that. Accel power is near the topend of each gear, top with the AX-4 is around 130km/h and at that speed, pray for a soft landing as its squirrley to hand;le
Tracker
Keep in mind that a fresh 2.5 or one that has been cared for will be different than some of these 1oo+K examples.

87manche
bah, I'm at 265K, the 4.0 runs fine. 2.5's are just as bulletproof. I've been told that a 4.0 TB fits the 2.5, and it offers much imporved throttle response due to the larger bore. Something to think about.

JOMJ87
OK the3 TB will fit but only the newer motors. The 4.0 throttle body is for a MPI motor and the 2.5 found in most late 80s if not all are TBI so you can't do the swap but i got a idea of power for you. Its a Avenger supercharger for the 2.5 at about $4500 you can have the power of a 4.0 and it only runs 5 Pounds of boost and gets those numbers. No other upgrade needed due to low boost but a hell of alot more fun to be had. The website is http://www.avengersuperchargers.com check it out just for giggles. Oh yeah you have to cut the hood for it to fit it was originally designed for the YJ. Cole
feerocknok
2,000 miles and a rodknock with no power! Yay! Yeah, if someone can handle the everyday power of the 2.5, they can handle the feeling of it with a bike in the bed. I'll be hauling a jetski this summer alot, probably weighs 200 lbs, but I know it won't be an issue.
Kenosha Warrior
I need to do something about the bloody sliding in the rain. I don't mean rearend slide. I mean the entire frontend will continue to move forward even if Ive got the wheel cranked right to lock left or right. Dry or otherwise. Its sorta bad other than that, its a good truck lol

DirtyComanche
Better tires help too. Oh, umm, maybe you've got a brake biasing issue.

Its sorta bad other than that, its a good truck lol What tires are you running? I don't want them on mine! (I had early BFGs on my '86 and they slid pretty easy in the rain, but not snow or dry) I wish they still made Big O 33/9.50/15 tires! My current set has over 120,000 miles on them! (got hit on the RH front tire and the misalignment ate 2 to crap in no time!)
