Spark Plug Access

Recommended Posts

Probably obvious, did you try putting the socket onto the plug then the ratchet onto the socket?

yea, tried that. guess I'm gona have to remove or at least loosen the ac comp. it looks that to loosen it i need to move it towards the block though which only puts it closer to the plug. but have no fear, i'll geter dun. just thought there might be something stupid that i'm missing.

You're not missing a thing. Whoever designed that setup was an idiot.

If the A/C compressor is positioned the same as on an '84 XJ, a deep-well spark plug socket (put on by hand, from the rear, underneath the radiator hose, between the valve cover and compressor) u-joint extension snapped onto that, and a short straight extension on top of that works pretty well. I've had #1 plug out a number of times on our '84 2.5-powered XJ, as recently as last week. It's not easy and you may have to fight with the radiator hose a bit, but if our rigs are set up the same it can (theoretically) be done.

They changed the layout of the accessories on the engine a little by 1990, when mine was built - #1's right out in the open. :D

And then they changed it back.....my '01 TJ has a 2.5, and the front plug is buried behind the compressor. I can barely get the spark plug socket on it with my fingertips, then I slide a short extension with a universal on it and unthread it. Have to take everything back off in reverse order then grab the plug tip with a pair of needlenose and fish it out. Absolutely absurd setup, considering they could have made the A/C bracket a bit wider and moved the pump over a little (a damn 1/2" would do it....)
