The front half of the tank and filler, vent hose will fit OK. However the rear half of the tank will be occupying some space in the wheel well. You know, The same space that the rear left hand tire is using.

Thanks! I was searching through posts about the Dakota tanks, etc... This is a better option for me since I'm not planning on a '97 conversion.

I just picked up an '89 MJ LWB with the 4.0 and the gas tank appears to be leaking at the pinch weld seam.

How? The fuel tank is mounted inside the frame rail. I am not saying a LWB tank will fit into a SWB but the tank is nowhere near coming in contact with the tire. I looked at doing this myself when I replaced my fuel tank but I needed the use of my truck so I just went with a stock replacement tank.

I can't see it getting into the wheel well, but into the shock area and over top of the axle sure. My new rear shocks with coil springs around them come very very (I'm talking less than 1/4") close to the outer rear corner on my tank. I could only imagine on a SWB how far back it would sit.

The rear shocks on a LWB are mounted in front of the axle. They are mounted behind the axle on the SWB. So the rear shocks shouldn't interfere. The axle might though.

I have one in decent shape with a dent in the bottom you can have for $50, NE Ohio. Tank was new 4 years ago.

I got rid of the bed and moved to a circle track fuel cell.

I need a gas tank, the large one preferably, from a long bed, skid would be nice too. Located in SE pa, anyone have on?

Have you gotten the Tank Yet??

If Not, Check with a Used Parts Yard, they are Usually less than AutoZone or Advanced.

To the OP:  I don't know if the big tank will fit in a short box truck or not.  BUT, do yourself a big favor and buy a NEW tank.  You don't need the headaches of a 25 year old rusty fuel tank that may or may not be as good as you hope it is.  I have seen them on Ebay for $80 or so.

The tank I got off ebay using the link posted above cost $114 with free shipping. It's installed and was a very close match to the original. It's the only shiny part on my MJ. :laughin:
