Thunderbear
Still waiting on the rear axle transplant. Given that I toasted the rear on the highway, I'm not super confident in the front.
Pete M
assuming you don't lose all your t-case fluids out the back?
NotMatt
I ran like that for a week and a half or so while waiting to get my rear driveshaft built after a 4wd swap. No slip yoke eliminator. My t-case was full when I started driving it around town like that (every day give or take a few for a week and a half), and I had to add about a quart into the t-case after... it was fairly low. Soooo, I'd say, it's perfectly do-able to drive around town for a bit with just the front driveline, and I never had any mechanical problems... but I wouldn't do it for very long, and I would keep a real close eye on the t-case fluid... and no hot-rodding, drive it like grandma on sunday going to church lol. ParadiseMJ
If it were me I would consider my Jeep grounded until I fixed the problem. But that's just me. It seems like you'd be asking to break something else driving like that...unless it was an emergency.
ftpiercecracker1
and no hot-rodding, drive it like grandma on sunday going to church . . . in a blizzard. I can't see any mechanical problem here, but as stated before just take it easy. Certainly no high way speeds. Instead of rear wheel drive its now just a front wheel drive, so long as you don't have a spooled front end there should be no problem. I done this my self just to see if it was possible and to see if 4wd was slipping out, hadnt done the CAD lock yet.
Thunderbear
assuming you don't lose all your t-case fluids out the back? Hard to lose it with the rear driveshaft still attached. :D The pinion spun all the teeth off the ring gear (I think) so the drive shaft just spins. It wouldn't be going far, just down the hill and back a mile or so.
Jerry
When i tried this I cut up a thick plastic bag and wrapped it over the rear shaft output hole and secured it with elastic bands. When the experiment was complete there was a cup full of t-case oil in the bag. My drive way is very steep so i expect the oil poured out going up that. You should be fine if you don't go up any steep hills and take it easy.
tmanhollister
i did this on my zj when i broke my rear pinion yoke. i put a latex glove over the transfer case output and duct taped it(after cleaning housing) and it held up great. i drove a total of about 10 miles with no issues. collkid
On my XJ. Went about 20 miles. Then fixed the rear.
Darren
I drove about 10 miles no rear shaft with a full case Detroit up front. You'll be fine.
Alexia
I drove like that for over a month and doing front wheel drive burn outs. It was a blast! However, that was with a 1996+ sealed rear output.
