starkizer
I am in dire need to replace my rear axle. I just moved to the South Texas Area and upon arrival I was greeted with shreaded spider gears in the dif. So as my MJ was my daily driver, I need to get her fixed! If anyone in my area has a Dana 35 Axle for sale, I will come a running! Here is the current specs off the plate on the pumpkin...... or if you happen to have a better solution (other then junk yard) please let me know. the plate reads 53004770 3.08 605324-1 Thanks guys! Alexia
You could buy replacement spider gears. A set for older axles may be difficult to find. http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-7139400-dana-35-spider-gear-kit-1-6-94-earlier.html
Geonovast
There must be a dozen guys on here who have piles of D35s in the scrap pile that they could yoink spiders from.
starkizer
How hard is it to change out there gears? I just started working at O'reilly Auto Parts and I looked and I know they can order in the loaded case with all the gears and all that for a couple hundred bucks. I don't have a lot of tools no special tools and no air supply at the new house yet. Do I need anything special for the job? Think it would be easy enough to replace the gears then the whole axle? starkizer
Also, just checked out the front axle and its geared at 3.07 not 3.08 (like the rear), does that make any difference.... I was thinking that should be the same gear ratio?

87Chief
Spiders aren't that hard to do.. JUst takes time, look it up on youtube.. Great place for that kind of stuff.
starkizer
after watching countless hours of youtube video. I have decided to replace the spiders and pretty much rebuild the whole axle. I think I can put in new axle shafts and bearings and races and seals and spiders and all that. Actual labor, no problem, Ive done worse. I just need to find the parts. The real irony so far is, I have only found the ring and pinion so far, which is the only part that is still good in the diff! Want to stick with new parts, so I'm going to do some searches online, probably buy 10 different brands of 10 different things. wish me luck, and you can bet it will be posted on my build page. mvusse
Why are you spending this much time and money on a junk axle that is most likely going to blow up again? When I replaced my D35 I gave it away for free. Most other people around here sold theirs for $30 scrap metal price.
Incommando
No, 3.07 to 3.08 is no problem and that is way the factory put them in there. You are talking about 1/100 of a revolution differnce. The widest range I know of from the factory is 4.27:1 & 4.30:1but I have read that a much wider range than that is acceptable. IF you know someone who can weld you could probably buy an XJ 8.25 and new perches to be welded on to MJ specs for about $100.

starkizer
upon the advice of pretty much everyone that has ever even seen a Jeep of any kind.... I am going to swap axles. I should be excited I know, but I am dreding it for some reason. I just want to be done and driving my baby again!
sinkrun
I think the 97 up cherokee (not the grand cherokee) axle will fit and is a strong upgrade I think the dealer has spring pearches for cheap. You will just have to have a shop weld them on right and gring the old one off.
