Figured a question like this belonged here since it pertains to the Cherokee. It's a 1993 with the AX15 tranny and the 4.0 with 254k. Basically I'm asking opinions of y'all more experienced with jeeps. It's been treated decent, is it worth $600 to buy it?

I've been hunting for an SUV for a while now. The thought of having to rebuild the engine doesn't bother me much.

I just bought a 96 XJ with 221k on it and 5 years ago I bought my wife's 98 XJ with 206k from the original owner. My 96 runs great and I expect to get another couple 100k out of the engine.

Hers has 381k on it now and it's her dd. We'd drive it to California right now with no worries.

For $600, how can you go wrong. Even if you only drive it for a year it'll still be worth nearly $300 as scrap. Beats making new car payments.

I wouldn't bother rebuilding a 4.0 HO yet. Still to many out there for cheap.

I just paid $100 for my 96 and I expect to get a couple years out of it still.

me and my buddy are working on a 2000 xj his sister wrecked. it has say over a month since the wreck. we went out and it fired right up and ran strong. it has 186xxx miles on it. not as many as some others but still close to 200. The jeep runs VERY strong and I don't doubt it will go another 100k at least! we seafoamed it and it was pretty clean inside.

I spent $600 on a 1996 XJ without a floor, missing about 9 feet of frame rails, seats hanging in the carpet and a fist sized hole rotted in the roof because I needed some parts off it, figuring I could make the money back selling the rest and scrapping what was left.

I appreciate all the info here. I am still seeking a jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 5spd.

The one I was interested in, and the reason behind this thread, drove by me as I went to see it having been sold a little earlier.
