jimoshel
On the full size AMC 20. Has anybody pulled the tubes out of the housing and cut a couple inches off them to where a MJ axle shaft would fit? Push the tubes back in and then weld them? Eagle
On the full size AMC 20. Has anybody pulled the tubes out of the housing and cut a couple inches off them to where a MJ axle shaft would fit? Push the tubes back in and then weld them? No, but it can be done. The AMC 20 is the axle that AMC used under all the V8 Javelins and AMXs, from the 290 all that way up to the 401. I used to race with guys who ran VERY built 390 AMXs with basically stock AMC 20 axles. Some even ran the factory limited slip, others went with Detroit Lockers. Except for one guy who built an AMX (the original, 2-seat version) for pro stock. To fit the size (width) tires he needed without adding external flares, he had to cut out the unibody in the trunk, weld in a custom-made, narrowed sub-frame, and shorten the axles several inches on each side. That was a very long time ago and I don't know if I ever knew exactly how he shortened the axles. If I knew once, I sure don't remember now. But it can be done and has been done. carnuck
One from a full size jeep isn't much wider than an XJ/MJ one. Just the rims were offset inwards on the smaller Jeeps.
xjrev10
FWIW, it seems only the abused D35s have problems. In this thread. Haha!
Keyav8r
After reading this thread I tried to find the post with photos of all the rear axle covers. My D35 seems to have a lot of slack (some may be U-joints or tranny) and I might want to swap in a better rear end instead of re-building it. Tried a lot of different search phrases but couldn't find the post. Anyone know where it is?

Exgrayxj
My 35 is noisy, I don't dare go too far from home... Been doing a little checking, it looks like the full size (72-84) Dodge 1/2 ton axle is about 3" overall wider than the xj/mj, would have bigger brakes, same bolt pattern (all 2wd and some 4wd) and could be 8 3/4" (drop out chunk) or 8.25". I am thinking that since some mj guys run 1- 1 1/2" spacers on the rear, this might be a good source for replacement/stronger rears, and nearly bolt in, with brakes as a plus. I found one, 3.55/suregrip 8.25, for $200, but don't dare drive the 200 or so miles round trip to go get it... I know it doesn't have the 29 spline, but doubt my tired 4.0 will tear it up.
