BLHTAZ
I have ordered a 3.5" RE Super Ride lift for the MJ, but it is an XJ kit that comes with an add-a-leaf for the rear. Obviously, I am not going to be able to use those, but I was thinking of going with a 2" shackle instead...any opinions or advice?? The kit comes with new lower control arms and I ordered the uppers to go with it as well as the adjustable track bar. :D
CWLONGSHOT
Using shackles alone to attain 2 additional inches of lift, would require almost a 9" shackle. I would not do it, thats just too long!!! The "right way" is to get new springs. The next best is to rebuild you pack to get the lift using leafs from other vehicles. Lastly I would go with s FULL LEGNTH add-A-leaf. Just my 2 cents... CW
Pete M
I'd put it all together and see how it sits. Then if it needs another inch, I'd consider a longer shackle.
BLHTAZ
Yea...the unfortunate part is that no one makes springs for such a small amount of lift. This Jeep is being built for looks, not for trail, so I am not worried about ride, flex or anything like that so I may just go with some add-a-leafs and be done with it. Thanks for the info/opinions so far. Any other ideas or input?? I have about 2 weeks before the lift gets here, so keep it coming. :D
feerocknok
I did 2.25" lift shackles and I wouldn't do it again that tall. I'd do 1.5" of lift maximum. Biggest complaint is how far forward the axle moved, and I assume my springs will be dead in 2 years of road use with occasional trails.

Just throw a bunch of spacers here and there and save yourself some money. I guarantee you when your back teeth are cracking from the ride you will regret not paying more attention to the comfort. BLHTAZ
If its just for looks with no regard for ride and functionality then why do it? I don't expect everyone to understand, but we all do things for our own reasons. This a a 3rd vehicle and only get's driven about 20 miles a month if that, but it's in great shape and being a rare vehicle we do not want to beat it up or drive it a lot. It was purchased for just this reason...to fix up and have as a spare driver if needed. We have a VERY nicely built YJ that we use for all of our wheelin', bangin'and breakin' ;) . I am buying the RE stuff because I have always used RE for it's quality...AND it is painted Gray, which is part of the color scheme that we are using on this project. The rear of these things is just such a pain to deal with, so I was hoping to get some advice from those of you that have done it and decide what is best for me from your input. HOrnbrod
New 5-leaf rear leaf packs with the same specs as the original MJ Metric Tonne springs are available from several vendors. I netted almost 2-1/2" with these, and they ride nicely too.

My MJ just has a spring reversal on the rear.It works good.I can't go SOA with the springs as that will give about 5" of lift and I only need about 2" with a 3.5" in the front. 87manche
skyjacker makes a full length AAL for the rear, it's a 3" piece. The ride is not horrible, but it definitly stiffened up the rear a bit. My spring packs were in good shape, so I got 3" of lift. Axle wrap has not been a problem, it flexes decently when there's a load in the rear. I usually carry a few hundred pounds in gear when I wheel. I've wheeled with the bed empty, and the front has to flex out before the rear starts working, when wheeling with an empty bed I leave the front swaybar connected to even out the suspension, otherwise the rear really dictates what the body does. pingpong
Use full size chevy drop shackles. They measure 8 3/4 inches eye to eye, and ride decent. Only problem is they change the pinion angle, and rotate the axle foward

The stock MJ shackles seem to be about 4.5" eye to eye, so it would seem that 8.75" would be a bit extreme.
carnuck
I put the overload leaf from my '84 J10 into the back of my '86 Comanche (I was lifting the J10 8" to match the SOA front I did so I had the old leaves around) That made it match the 3" front coils I put in. My question is for such a little lift, why waste the money on arms and everything else? All I did was front coils and new brake hoses (YJ of the same year) on the front. It's worked fine since '02. BLHTAZ
My question is for such a little lift, why waste the money on arms and everything else? The bushings are worn out on the stock arms, so they have to be replaced one way or another. It is a "looks" thing as well because this is being done more for looks than anything. ;) 8.75 - 4.5 = 4.25 4.25 / 2 = 2.125 inches of lift. Thanks for that info. I'll check in to that too.
