88mj34tsl Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 i was climbing some hills and ridin trails bouncing around and my alt. quit charging. alt is brand new. had it checked any how it tested out great. i have been tracing wire after and can't figure anything out. please help its drivin me crazy!!!
Jeep Driver Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Check your fused link. Check your grounds. One dead cell in a battery is a current black hole. Bench tested? I've them bench test good but not charge, same with batteries. I put a new alt in that lasted about 3 weeks........swapped and upgraded and been good for a couple of months now.
cruiser54 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Got a voltmeter? Need to have battery voltage at the stud on the alternator for one thing. With key on but not started, unplug the little clip-on connector from the alternator that has 2 wires. Should be 12 volts or so at the yellow wire.
cruiser54 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 In the big red wire to the alternator. It's a fuse link IIRC. Have you tested to see if you have voltage at the stud of the alternator yet? If you do, it ain't the fuse.
88mj34tsl Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Yes I tested at the stud. Its not charging a lick. I do n't remember seeing a fuse I will definitely check that out when I get home
Jeep Driver Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 The wire itself is a fuse........fused link. The wire runs from the post at alt to a circuit breaker and then to the battery.
88mj34tsl Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Oh OK I sure do appreciate the advice. A dead battery is no fun
JeffN Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Sounds like your alt died, even new ones can fail. Check for voltage at the stud and check to make sure one wire on your plug has power with key on, if not it will not "excite" the alternator to charge, second wire in the plug if it has one turns on your charge light if it has one
88mj34tsl Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 I thought so too. But I bought a new one and had it tested before I went home and it was good. I also had the old one tested and it tested good. That is why I am so lost
cruiser54 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 Have you tested the wires at the alternator, the plug, for voltage with key on as myself and someone else have already suggested?
88mj34tsl Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Not yet. I work on the road. I will when I get home.
ComancheKid45 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Make sure your battery terminals are clean and tight.....a loose terminal (even just a bit) will cause alot of funky readings on your gauge and meter. ;)
cruiser54 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Have you tested the wires at the alternator, the plug, for voltage with key on as myself and someone else have already suggested? We aren't gonna know nothing for sure until this is done.
88mj34tsl Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 OK. I finally got to go home and work on the Comanche. I check the yellow wire at the plug it was not hot. I ran a hot wire to it and it started charging. I was so excited then about 5 min later it quit again. I tried grounding body to motor. Motor to neg. And body the neg post. Oh yea and now the yellow wire is hot.
cruiser54 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Ok, so yellow wire is now hot with the key on, you've got battery voltage at the stud on the alternator all the time? Should charge unless alternator is bad.
88mj34tsl Posted February 17, 2012 Author Posted February 17, 2012 Is the yellow wire supposed to be hot all the time when the key is on?
cruiser54 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Yes, the yellow wire is hot with key on. What voltage do you have at the alternator stud? Same as battery?
88mj34tsl Posted February 17, 2012 Author Posted February 17, 2012 Yea same as battery. Its not putting out anything. It was charging like two days ago
cruiser54 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 So the yellow wire is not hot with the key on?
cruiser54 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Okay. If the yellow wire is hot with the key on and the alternator stud shows battery voltage all the time, the alternator is no good.
88mj34tsl Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 Okay. I took the alt. And had it tested 4 times at two different places and it pass everytime. took it home put it back on not charging. Yellow wire is hot but I ran a hot wire to it any way. Still no charge. Stud is hot. I'm about to go crazy :headpop:
88mj34tsl Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 What does the other wire on the plug do?
