RockinMJ Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 I have been lurking on this board for a while and searching for a worthy candidate to start building. Well the search is over. I found a 1987 Jeep Comanche Chief 4.0, 5spd, short box. Its not perfect by any means. Box has some major dents. Both front fenders , header, and grill are shot. Not worried about front going to do 97+ front end conversion. Inspiration for this build is H3RESQ Comanche. This will be weekend driver/ toy. This is not my first rodeo on building jeeps. I have had cj2a,m38a1, stretched cj5,xj, tj, and a zj all built. Plans so far. I'm sure they will be changing. When finished building making the epic trip to Moab, Utah. ******** WISH LIST ******** 97+ FRONT END CONVERSION 97+INTERIOR CONVERSION 8.8 REAREND RUBICON WHEELS----------√ TOOLBOX --------√ HP DANA 30 ALLOYS LONG ARM SUSPENSION GEARS( NOT SURE YET) STROKED 4.0 TO A 4.7 REBUILT TRANNY 35" BFG KM2S ROCK SLIDERS ARB FRONT BUMPER WARN M8000 Linex inside
cody4359 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 aww Jason is going to blush when he reads that :D
jonb8 Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Nice, I like the chiefs. Don't look so bad to me, I just bought a black 87 that most people would haul straight to the crusher....
H3RESQ Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011    Closest smily to blushing..... Good luck with the build.
gaucho919 Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I like it, I'm running a similar drivetrain on mine and the same bumper. can't wait to see it going
RockinMJ Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Gaucho your jeep looks good .Gotta love those ARB bumpers. I had one on my 98 cherokee. Well I got the Comanche home today and started on it right away. Pulled the interior and found dirt under carpet but no rust. I am very happy. One less thing I have to worry about. Here are some pictures.
Automan2164 Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 Jacksonville, AL. Keep me posted of you decide to ditch the brushguard and the lights on it. I have a factory hidden winch and bumper that originally came with a factory brushguard like yours. My brushguard is missing though. Rob
RockinMJ Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 I haven't decided what I want to do with the brushguard yet. Y'all will be first to know.
cody4359 Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 my vote would be to ditch it and get a winch bumper thats built beefier and looks better. just my 2¢
RockinMJ Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 I'm definitely not leaving it on this project. I'm using an ARB bumper. I probably going hang on to it to use somewhere down the road on another project.
RockinMJ Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 My neighbor came over to check out the new project and brought me some nice motor mounts that his son never used on his Comanche.
RockinMJ Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Got some work done today the mj. Got fenders off and roll bar removed and sold. Also picked up a toolbox for $50.00. Little pieces of the big puzzle.
RockinMJ Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 New wheels and tires(tires are temporary)for the comanche. Picking them up Saturday.
RockinMJ Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 Just got back with wheels and tires. Couldn't resist. What a difference wheels and tires make. A little motivation now.
RockinMJ Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Found these on Craigslist and had to pick them up. Lets just say I got a smoking deal on the lights.Picked them up for the brushguard I don't even have yet.
RockinMJ Posted April 25, 2012 Author Posted April 25, 2012 Well its been a while since I have posted anything. Well as we all know sometimes life gets in the way of toys and that is what has happened to me. Everything was going smoothly on the build then we decided to remodel a bathroom which turned into a 2 bathroom gut down to studs and floor joist. Lets just say it got expensive. Luckily I did all work myself except drywall and saved some money. I had just bought another mj to rob the bed and a few other goodies but ended up selling it to another member on here Alexia (great guy). I also ended up selling my Rubicon wheels and tires and regreted it as soon as the guy left. Well I finally found a pretty good deal on some more Moab wheels so I picked them up. Oh yeah I got 5 this time. I hope to be picking up another Comanche soon for a bed. I'm hopefully back on track.
RockinMJ Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 Had a guy on one of the local forums had some free BFG 315/75/16 he advertised as rollers or trail spares .I went and picked them up and they still had good tread on them. They will work until I get my km2s.
RockinMJ Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Got the 35's mounted. Had to put them o n the Comanche just to see what they looked like. No lift yet. No front fenders yet either.
RockinMJ Posted June 11, 2012 Author Posted June 11, 2012 Picked up a 97 jeep Cherokee please today for the conversion. Its got 219,000 miles on it. Little high but couldn't pass up the sweet deal i got on it.
RockinMJ Posted June 16, 2012 Author Posted June 16, 2012 Pulled motor, transmission, transfer case , and the rest of the interior. Next will pressure washing everything and then painting engine bay.
mountainman Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Damn dude... you don't mess around. That is a FULL teardown. :) Hopefully we can wheel at moab late this year or early next year. I'm shootin for mine to be worthy also.
