mild lift (1.5-2") How?

Recommended Posts

Ive got a 2wd MJ, and the front is sorta lower than the rear. Canadian tire sells coil spacers (they are legal here in street vehicles) and I would like to even out the stance of the truck. Now, if I wanted to lift the rear. How would i go about that. How does AAL work? If the truck is SUA, then wouldn't adding a leaf make the truck lower? I'm just a little confused and could use the info :)

For an add-a-leaf, take the leaf springs off the truck and axle, then remove the nut that holds the pack of leaves together, stick the new leaf in the pack, bolt the pack back together, and install it back on the truck.

Basically, the add-a-leaf forces the springs to arch and give lift.

I *believe* you can reuse your old clamps, to keep the leaves from fanning out, and the bolt that goes through the leaf pack that you had to remove, goes back into the pack to hold the leaves together.

You do need a clamp to take the leaves aparts, or they will explode around your workplace. Just a C-Clamp or the like for that.

To take a leaf pack apart I always use at least three big C-clamps. One on each outside end of the SMALLEST bottom leaf and one in the center of it all clamped on the pack vertically so you can use the clamps to let the compression off. This allows for YOU to be very much in control of the situation, just back each one off slowly and back them all off evenly. Otherwise those things will come off and could cause some serious injury if you are in their path... Take it slow and wear eye protection. It is also not a bad idea to loosely tie a beefy rope around the whole pack so that if all else fails and they fly apart the rope will contain them to some extent. You won't regret taking your time. To line them all back up clamp them all back down at even intervals and run a peice of bolt stock in the center pin hole to keep them aligned. New center pins are pretty cheap too if and arent a bad investment while you are in there playing with the packs.

ok, next question. where would one aquire an AAL kit.

Rancho offers on. They list the same one for the XJ and the MJ. Despite what their catalog says, it produces less lift in an MJ than it does in an XJ. I used to have the exact numbers I got from a Rancho engineer, but I've forgotten. Should be fine for a 2WD MJ budget boost.

The advantage an AAL offers over a drop shackle is that the AAL also raises the spring rate. This increases carrying capacity and helps the spring live longer. A drop shackle allows the spring to flex more than stock, which allows it to wear out faster.

Hmmm ... stronger and lasts longer, or the same capacity and wears out faster. I know which I'd choose.

Make sure you get a long AAL, not a short AAL. Both varieties exist out there and the long one should ride better than the short.

shock absorbers that arne't rotted to ell help too. I think I'm going to keep looking for a long AAL leaf. ive got coil spacers already, its just that I may not lift the rear, as I wanna keep the stance of the truck level front to rear.

I may just leave it and buy the MJ I hvae my eyes on. '86 2.5L 5spd 207. Needs tires, exhaust and a floor. wants a grand and a half for it, and I just don't have that much at the moment. Its sat, but the frame is good. Could I use any parts off it? the motor has 400 thou km's on it, still starts. I go look longingly at it every day.

If you're not looking for much lift out back, try adding in a main leaf (with the eyes cut off) from an MJ or an Explorer leaf pack. Just insert it under your current main leaf and you'll gain maybe an inch plus added carrying capacity (or more importantly, extra resistance to sagging). Quality gas shocks would also be a plus.

rob jump on jeepkings.ca, the site is useless for getting help as everyone there hates a beginner, but when it comes to parts and stuff it will all be. if ur already signed on there, pm a fellow by the name of...Jeepman. his name is alex. he can hook you up with prices and stuff

and 1500 is waaaaaaaaaaaay to mmuch for that

you could get one in way better shape down here in windsor for around 400 bucks, and hopefully that would be closer to being in ur price range

Sinnaevd.....Jeepkings isnt all bad ya know. It was me that pointed you in the direction of ComancheClub remember LOL.

I remember replying to your questions......even sent ya pic's of my MJ , it just depends on who replies to your post , some of them bash the newbies pretty bad.

Some of them make me laugh.....think they are hard core wheelers even if they drive a YJ with 31's on it HAHAHA you would almost think they had a rock buggy with D60's under it. :D

your absolutally right, there are a lot of good guys that i talk to on there, you are definately one of em. i just hate that i always have to ask questions thru PM's. i get bashed cuz i don't know how to search very well, and its kinda annoying. but at the same time, if no one asked the question that hasnt been asked and answered already, i think there would be very little chatting going on, as most ppls mods have been done before.

i like this site, everyones always willing to help out the newbies

and BTW, u still have that almost rust free box? or did u end up selling it? I just ran across the pictures of it agin the other day lol
