Factory XJ/MJ CD Player

Was a factory cd player a option for 1996 & older xj`s & mj`s? I seem to recall seeing one listed in a old factory parts catalog, but I am not able to come up with anything.

All my research for the Comanche history site, and I didn't see mention of a factory CD player for the MJ.

 

Even if there was, I doubt few people got one.

 

The factory AM-FM Stereo for the MJ cost $177 in 1986.

No factory single din cd players, all Jeep cd players are 1.5 din.

Yes there was. The CD player was a rare option for 95 and below XJs (as far as I know they were not on MJs). They were single DIN and there also was a "pull out" unit for them. The part numbers are below. GJeep out in Cali has a NOS unit he is going to install in the MJ he's restoring.

I couldn't find one either and ended up installing a Mitsubishi single DIN unit. Looks almost factory.

I tried searching in vain, but someone here (I had thought anotherjeff or jpnjim) put in a ford CD player, and other than the little oval, it looked good, and semi factory.

I have done a lot of looking for the perfect radio swap that would keep the factory appeal and look for the era. I was just going to put an old disc changer behind the seat and wire it into the stock radio but decided I didn't want the little changer fob. Thought of using one from a Ford Contour. It fits good and doesn't look too bad. Even has a small amp with them.

 

 

Then one day while looking for some parts for a mazda pu, the JY guy sent me to the wrong row. Instead of a mazda pu, it was a mazda protege. I was a little tick until I looked inside a saw something I might could use. The radio has a single knob and buttons like the MJs have. Also it should fit better than the ford one because it is almost identical in size. The Ford one needed just a little bit of shaving around the bezel so the buttons wouldn't hit. The mazda one will not need any modifications that I can see however I have not put it in yet.

 

 

 

 

I'll be sure to upload pic's in my build when I get around putting it in but I think it should look good. Just have to rub that Mazda word off of it.

Paul, the Mopar p/n's above were (supposedly) originally Mitsubishi units that Mopar re-badged as the Jeep CD player option. I couldn't find any of the Jeep badged CD players, so looked for a Mitsubishi original. Couldn't find any of those either, didn't look really hard though, but stumbled on the the single DIN size Mitsubishi unit that I eventually used and amk happy with. So if you're looking for a correct period Jeep CD player, I'd be looking in Mitsubishi vehicles. :cheers:

And just for thought, when my father bought his XJ NEW in 1993, a CD player was in fact an option. But I believe it is so rare because if I recall correctly it was an almost 800 hundred dollar option. So yes, they do exist. Somewhere.

I was curious if the sound quality was any better with your Mitsubishi compared to your factory radio? I wanted to retain the factory radio in the worst way so I thought I would be smart and replace the speakers. I replaced only the b-pilar ones, not the door ones and keep the factory radio. I realize the b-pilar speakers are a little small but I would have thought anything would be better than factory. In hindsite, I think the bulk of the sound is in the doors. Regardless, it didnt sound any better.

Definitely yes on the Mitsu radio. I did replace the door speakers but not the rear speakers. What's even better is that it pulls in stations that I could never receive before.

Never really had the chance to compare. I swapped all my speakers with Infinitys which make pretty much everything sound better. :D

No, he opted out for that reason exactly.

There is the very off chance he still has his order sheet, as it was a custom order.

2 Door, 4.0 H.O., AX-15, 4x4, Sport, Red... took them about 2 months to put together.

I got it when I turned 16, back in 2005, I put an Alpine in it.

Then I rolled it in Late 09 or Early 10....

Resurecting an old thread. That Mitsu radio/cd I installed in my XJ until I could find an actual Jeep unit. I still have the Mitsu radio/cd if anyone wants it. I installed the Jeep unit today.

I still have mine too - works great. And the same "I still have the Mitsu radio/cd if anyone wants it." Comes with mounting bracket and adapter harness too. Maybe I'll list it in the classifieds.........
