AMC-MJ
My transmission started howling in 3rd gear then 2nd n Reverse picked up a loud growl, few weeks later 1st started whining now 4th grinds on the up shift every time. So not really sure what to think I'm guessing its going to fail soon ? Mike
Geonovast
I should have a 2wd AX-4 in Marshall that may or may not be any good. Could be good for parts. You can have it if my mom hasn't tossed it yet.
AMC-MJ
Might have to take you up on that offer, cause I don't its going to last very long with how quick it went from one gear to all gears making noise ! Mike
AMC-MJ
I'm think about changing out the fluid, tho I am sure damage is already done. How much fluid dose the AX-4 hold ? What dose it take gear oil ? ATF ? Motor oil ? Mike
AMC-MJ
I knew I could find the answer faster then you sleepy heads, The AX4 holds 3.75qts of 80w-90 or 75w-90 gear oil ! Off to waste money on an AX4, On some 75-90 as it was the most recommended lube to use. Mike
Pete M
doesn't really matter. It's all good. be sure to measure how much comes out so you'll know if it was low or not. and keep an eye out for metal bits in the oil.

There was a service bulletin about this some years back. Trust me!!
Pete M
you're thinking of the AX-15. plain ol' GL-5 is still recommended for the AX-4 and AX-5.
jimmy21669
The service bulletin was for the AX_ tranny's. AX5 and AX15 using brass synchros. The recommendation was for GL-3 fluids and the part number 4897622aa was superseded by part number 4761839AC. 4761839AC is 10W30 Oil. I run it in mine.... AMC-MJ
10w-30 engine oil ! Ha ! I wouldn't run that in an engine much less a manual transmission lol your crazy . . . I use 75-140syn or 85-140conv in my gear boxes normally, but the other 2 are what was listed for the AX-4/5 . . . So 75-90 mobile 1 it is end of story, I am confident this trans is trashed anyway but at least its full n clean ;-) ! Mike

Geonovast
I thought the AX-4/5 and AX-15 used different materials for synchros?
AMC-MJ
Well I am going to be filling my AX-4 4 speed manual transmission with Mobile 1 GL-5 75w-90, As both my manual and a quick net search listed both 75&80w-90 gear lube/oil as the correct fluids . . . When a switch over to the V8/AX-15 combo I will run what that book says to . . . Mike
jimmy21669
Pete, I will find the link. Look up the viscosity properties of GL3 and 10w-30, they are the same. Then look up the part number.
Pete M
When a switch over to the V8/AX-15 combo I will run what that book says to . . .Mike the book is wrong unless it says GL-3. There's some debate as to whether it as oiginally a typo, or Chrysler just plain got it wrong. Chrysler recently changed the requirement to the motor oil (I believe there are some aftermarket gear oil synthetics that still qualify). GL-5 will eat the synchros in an AX-15. of this there is no doubt.
jimmy21669
I thought the AX-4/5 and AX-15 used different materials for synchros? I have had them both apart....brass synchros....when I drained the GL5 it looked like glitter...
AMC-MJ
Yep I don't really care about the AX15 at all I have an AX4 that the fill plug won't come out of so piss on it no fluid change for it ! So the new plan is let it whine howl and growl til it shatters all over the highway : ) ! Don't fix'em crush'em Mikey out
Geonovast
Take the shifter out and fill it that way.

Amsoil MTG meets the actual specs.. not the one Chrysler later introduced to lower service center costs to them.. So does Redline MTL...
91coMANche
Realistically, what you need to do is put a little bit of heat on the drain plug and get it loose. Manual transmission really don't go south before the body is unusable unless the fluid gets thick and tar-like. You have thick, tar-like fluid from condensation and metals depositing. Replace it and it may help but probably won't fix or prevent the inevitable which is catastrophic failure. At least you know its going to lock up on you. AMC-MJ
I would have ran the AMSOIL 75-90, guess what ? Its such a fine product nobody ever has any on there shelves ! ! ! But hey you can order it if you aren't in a hurry or can tell the future ! ! ! Farm n Barn stocked the Mobile 1 75-90 and 75-140 :-) More less I wasn't going to shove $100 worth of fluid, into a dieing trans $60 in fluid was a bit much but still $40 cheaper and I had it right now, ultimately this whole drive train is going to get removed and replaced with an AMC V8 power/ drive train ;-) ! Pete M
it probably needs under $10 in oil. and you can fill it from the comfort of the cab. I would dump in a quart and see what happens.
AMC-MJ
I got 5 bottles of the Mobile 1 75w-90 which is not returnable as the product wasn't defective ! So a fluid change out is what it will get ! At least I know its full and clean ;-) ! Fill from cab ? How ! ? Mike
