AMC-MJ Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 My transmission started howling in 3rd gear then 2nd n Reverse picked up a loud growl, few weeks later 1st started whining now 4th grinds on the up shift every time. So not really sure what to think I'm guessing its going to fail soon ? Mike

AMC-MJ Posted December 26, 2010 Author Posted December 26, 2010 I knew I could find the answer faster then you sleepy heads, The AX4 holds 3.75qts of 80w-90 or 75w-90 gear oil ! Off to waste money on an AX4, On some 75-90 as it was the most recommended lube to use. Mike
Pete M Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 doesn't really matter. It's all good. be sure to measure how much comes out so you'll know if it was low or not. :thumbsup: and keep an eye out for metal bits in the oil.

There was a service bulletin about this some years back. Trust me!!

I use 75-140syn or 85-140conv in my gear boxes normally, but the other 2 are what was listed for the AX-4/5 . . . So 75-90 mobile 1 it is end of story, I am confident this trans is trashed anyway but at least its full n clean ;-) ! Mike

When a switch over to the V8/AX-15 combo I will run what that book says to . . . Mike

There's some debate as to whether it as oiginally a typo, or Chrysler just plain got it wrong. Chrysler recently changed the requirement to the motor oil (I believe there are some aftermarket gear oil synthetics that still qualify). GL-5 will eat the synchros in an AX-15. of this there is no doubt. :thumbsup:

Amsoil MTG meets the actual specs.. not the one Chrysler later introduced to lower service center costs to them.. So does Redline MTL...
91coMANche Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Realistically, what you need to do is put a little bit of heat on the drain plug and get it loose. Manual transmission really don't go south before the body is unusable unless the fluid gets thick and tar-like. You have thick, tar-like fluid from condensation and metals depositing. Replace it and it may help but probably won't fix or prevent the inevitable which is catastrophic failure. At least you know its going to lock up on you.

But hey you can order it if you aren't in a hurry or can tell the future ! ! ! Farm n Barn stocked the Mobile 1 75-90 and 75-140 :-) More less I wasn't going to shove $100 worth of fluid, into a dieing trans $60 in fluid was a bit much but still $40 cheaper and I had it right now, ultimately this whole drive train is going to get removed and replaced with an AMC V8 power/ drive train ;-) !
