Pete M Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 by removing the shifter handle base. start disassembling the center console area and it should be pretty straightforward.
AMC-MJ Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 What's this center council of which you speak ? . . ? I have big hole in the floor with a rusty metal ring with a bunch of what used to be phillips screws I think ? They got nice round holes in heads anyways . . . Mike
Pete M Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 if there's no console, then you're half way there already. :D
AMC-MJ Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 Just tear it open then pour in 4qts of lube ? . . . Sounds to easy ! What's going to come flying out ? Really sounds like a project for me not to do, as I tend to smash and bust bend and destroy delicate inner workings ;-) Mike
Pete M Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 no. open it up (it's 3 or 4 bolts), pull out the shifter and base together, then pour in 1 quart. There's nothing really to mess up. If you're just low on oil, your should see a noticeable improvement. had to do that to my peugeot every once in a while.
AMC-MJ Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 I cracked the drain just to get a sample, looks like grayish/Milky color but it didn't sparkle ? My guess it sat 7 years with 187K miles its now at 197K n counting . . . Sounds like moisture and lack of maintenance to me. Mike
Oly Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 i also have the ax-4 tranny I'm my mj with the 2.5. when i changed the slave cylinder (about 3 weeks ago) i drained the gear oil and put new gl-5 in it. (i work for an auto parts store and thats what the computers and books recommend) my tranny still whines really bad. it did before and its still doin it now. however i had no metal shavings in the oil....
