camjeep3
i was over on jf  cruising through some build threads. i came across an mj build so i look at it. saw some "fab" that was pretty scary i thought. no one else who posted seemed to care. seems like that place has gone down hill. idk. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/1988 ... d-1112776/ see if you can pick out my post

87Warrior
Well. Hmm. At least the accident won't occur above 45mph...
terrawombat
I'd like to call it Redneck Engineering at its finest, but the guy is from Sweden. We need a native of Sweden to tell us their term for Redneck :D
ryno56
What's wrong with those? :dunno:
terrawombat
What's wrong with those? :dunno: Well, if you're being serious, which I don't think you are.... The upper control arms consist of black oxide coated socket cap screws of an unknown grade that are welded to what looks to be 16 or 18 gauge sheet metal that was likely bent with a hammer and a vice. These upper control arms are going to be responsible for handling the wear and tear of a lifted off-road vehicle with VERY large tires on it. If they hold up for an extended period of time, I will be very surprised. He did say he was going to replace them with something a little more robust, but he also said he would be using these for the time being and if they failed, so what. I just hope that when they fail, he is traveling 5MPH on an open, flat surface with no one around him.
camjeep3
he said he was going to beef them up but, only a little? doesnt make sense at all to me. It seems jk has turned into a group of a bunch of kids who just got jeeps and don't really have a clue.(not saying being a noob or a kid is bad. I'm 19 and we all start somewhere)

He should probably put bigger welds on them then.
STERLING STINGER
that pic is very .....entertaining? all that $$$ that dude put into that truck and he has them for an uca???wtf???
jpdocdave
Cutted the ends of the upper arms too and welded a tube onto them also. In one end of the tube i welded a nut and on the bracket i welded a bolt to get some adjustability. Looks like sh*t but seems to work.. :rotf:
xjrev10
scary that the guy passin you on the interstate could have booty fab like this under his rig... don't need to worry about this dude here in the u.s. tho. the reason i say this is just like what Cam said. NO ONE said anything to him about it. They are more curious on how much wheel spacers are and where they got them from. Your sitting on the computer, go look! yep not a fan of jeep forum.
Pete M
that's probably why home-brew suspensions are illegal here in michigan..... :shake:
ryno56
that's probably why home-brew suspensions are illegal here in michigan..... :shake: Meaning what exactly? Does your suspension have to be factory parts? What's the difference between an aftermarket suspension and "home-brew", assuming it was well-built? Stupid laws.. you can't kill whales in Oklahoma either.
Pete M
The wording is vague enough that aftermarket lift kits would work. you can still build anything you want, just keep it off the roads (privilege, not a right). Could be worse. there are states that have full vehicular inspections and require you to fix things like lousy rust holes. it's just politicians trying to lessen the dangers on the roads due to idiots like that guy in the link. Competent people always lose when idiots are on the loose.

Competent people always lose when idiots are on the loose. I agree 100%. Especially since I had to cancel my last whaling expedition to OK City. Lol. I imagine they'd have trouble discerning between a well-built custom suspension and one bought as a kit, if kits are passable.
Pete M
the bottom line is that if you built it and it breaks on the road and kills people, you are liable. and somehow I doubt your insurance will cover that. $100 for control arms, or a million for damages. :dunno:
