jpdocdave
I have used the factory front hooks, and the hi country, to me the hicountry were way better, I recommend them to anyone asking for front tow hooks. They were beefier, and the install was way better than the factory version as well. http://store.hicountryoffroad.com/Xtrem ... _p_42.html

ParadiseMJ
eBay Look for the ones with ALL the hardware. Brackets that tie into the frame, not just hooks.
Motion Offroad
C4x4 XJ/MJ Tow Hook Kit is by far the best kit around.
Eagle
C4x4 XJ/MJ Tow Hook Kit is by far the best kit around. :agree: The MJ is a uni-body. You can't just bolt on hooks, you MUST add mounts of sufficient strength to stand up to the forces applied. The C4x4 kit has brackets that are near-clones of the factory mounts. Although it CAN be done. My XJ had hooks bolted straight to the "frame". The C4x4 hooks & brackets are really the only REAL and SAFE option. A bit more expensive, but worth not ruining your Jeep or taking someone's head off. :smart:

jpdocdave
I don't know how people can say the c4x4 are the only real safe hooks? The Hi Country brackets are beefier than the factory version, are stronger in my opinion, and easier/better installation. And you can do hooks or clevis
Eagle
I don't know how people can say the c4x4 are the only real safe hooks? I didn't say they are the only safe hooks. It is absolutely unsafe to bolt hooks directly to the unibody -- reinforced mounting brackets are a must. I think the C4x4 kit is the best. The one you linked to also looks decent but I haven't seen it "up close and personal." There are others out there, as well -- including (last I knew) as individual parts from Keystone (the Chinese fender vendor). Take your pick -- just DON'T bolt tow hooks (or D-rings) directly to the unibody.

Eagle didn't say C4x4 were the only "safe" hooks, someone else did whom I normally don't listen to. :D However Eagle was involved in the early development of the Hi Country hooks as well as Pete and other CC members. The final product, based on a lot of CC input, is, as jpdocdave says, is very high quality and as "safe" if not more so than the C4x4 product. An added benefit is that they reinforce the crack-prone frame area supporting the steering gear. http://comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5241&hilit=tow+hooks
jpdocdave
^ thanks, sums it up well. also the one that said the c4x4 are the only real and safe option, also suggested the ebay kit earlier in this thread. All I'm saying is that quotes such as "c4x4 are by far the best ones around" and then an "I agree" to that statement, and "they're the only real and safe ones" aren't all that true, there are other good options to consider, thats all. mvusse
I have had a set of Custom 4x4 hooks on my Comanche and have been extremely happy with them. Never any problem. They were obsoleted by my new bumper which incorporates tow hook mounts on top of it. I'm now in the process of installing the C 4x4 brackets and hooks on Sparkles. If I had the need to buy another set I probably would opt for the Hi Country ones just so I could compare them side by side. One solution to D rings is a set of CT hooks from Jawz JP Customs. CNC machined out of a single piece of 1.25" think steel. I have broken a 10,000 pound tow strap hooked to one of those attempting to free a Cherokee sitting on the frame. 15 foot run to build up momentum, 3 consecutive pulls moved him about 6" each time. The 4th snapped the strap. Also been winched out myself multiple times by those hooks. I trust them more than the standard hooks that come with the C 4x4 kit. These hooks are not cheap at $55 a piece, but the cost includes grade 8 hardware and a $30 3/4" shackle.

I wasn't the one who made the "safe" comment; however I was the one who said "C4x4 are by far the best ones around". As a vendor for both manufactures and having both of the items as a normally stocked item on our shelves, installing them on a regular basis on customers XJ's & MJ's, I feel that I probably more than anyone here can back up my statement; whether it be an "opinion" or not. It has nothing to do with how much "profit" we make from either vendor either. Actually we make more from the Hi-Country kit than we do from the C4x4 kit. Both companies have been a pleasure to deal with on a weekly basis as well. The C4x4 kit is made from thicker material, has a side support brace in the major stress area of the hook itself for better side-pull distribution; 2 very important things when it comes to considering a set of hooks/mounts. Thus why I made the comment I did. Both kits I have no question about being "SAFE" or not. I've used both kits and both are a quality product. I do give props to Matt @ Hi-Country for redesigning the kit to resolve some of the "issues" with the new Xtreme kit they now have out. It's a very high quality well thought out kit that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. It has a major benefit over the C4x4 kit with the fact you can opt for it with d-ring mounts. Both are a quality kit; both I'd recommended to a customer, and both I'd run on my own Jeep. However with that said, I still feel that the C4x4 is the better kit on the market. I do apologize if you feel that I have not been fair to your previous post. In ParadiseMJ's defense I think they were making the "SAFE" comment in direct reference to bolting hooks directly to the "frame" of the XJ/MJ. I don't think that it had anything to do with calling the Hi-Country kit unsafe. Maybe I'm wrong but that is simply how I'm reading the reply. -Adam

And like you said, the guys at Hi Country are great people, with a great product, and they did redesign their product from feedback from people like us. And they do have a D ring option. Its too nice of a product, and too nice of people for me to just let get rolled over by a bunch of people on here saying c4x4 are the only ones around. Thanks Adam for clearing it up better, your input on this post is very clear and agreeable.
mythreesons
Ok, I have to make two points about this (really three): #1 The written english language has so many variants that sometimes original meanings are not conveyed so further definition and explanation are required to reveal the proper meaning. This has just happened here before my very eyes. I salute you guys for making further explanations to make your meanings clear. This just cannot be conveyed properly using shorthand "text talk". #2 This just provides another example of the type of forum that this is. Experiences and opinions matter but they do not have to have the ego's and hurt "feelings" to have a discussion. #3 Timely information is VERY helpful. I just bought another XJ and I was thinking about buying three sets of hooks for the two XJs and the MJ at my house just to have on the vehicles in case. I have now been educated and will have to save up my nickels and dimes, but I will be better off in the long run. Thanks Guy's!!!!!!!!
jpdocdave
^ it is definitely a great investment. One of the first things any mj or xj needs is a front tow point. I put them on my mj and xj right away, and I don't consider them wheeling jeeps, but they need to have front tow points. Great for pulling in the snow, or pulling dead vehicles, or whatever needs to be done.
Motion Offroad
Just a FYI to those interested in the Hi-Country product. We received notification this morning (9/20/10) that Hi-Country will no longer be in business as of today. They currently are taking no new orders and are selling all remaining stock. They DO NOT have any tow hook kits in stock. Matt & Kelley have moved back to CO and are perusing other things.

mvusse
It seems that place sells standard tow hooks. The same ones that TSC sells for less than half the price. But without a real frame to bolt them to you still need brackets to properly secure them to a unibody behicle like a Comanche.
