I've noticed in quite a few pictures of MJs with factory bumpers that the bumpers seem to sag, just like mine.

Mine sags due to an accident...but this got me thinking...have that many people been rear-ended in their MJs?

Are people that amazed to see a Jeep pickup that they forget to hit the brakes?

Please do discuss!

Saggig/twisting/bending was built into th MJ bumper. With 1/8" brackets welded to the bumper & bolted to the end of the brackets coming off the uni-body frame rails it was a weak design. They added a 44 3/4" long bar made of welded up 1/8 stock from one bumper brkt to the other as an after thought to add strength of little significance so that the bumper wouldn't buckle when you set a tow ball on it. . That thing is like being attached with fly swatter ends. Which ever way you slap it, it's gonna go. The fat lady stepping on the center of it can twist it outa shape.

My original bumper sagged a bit over the years and then I got hit by a Honda at a stoplight, then it sagged a lot. :(

The replacement bumper hasn't sagged at all, but it is rusting through in several places. :headpop:

The factory bumper brackets were nothing to write home about. All it takes is a little bump when you're backing up to something. I remember ours got messed up when my Dad was backing up to a loading dock and bumped the black hard rubber bump stop (that's when he knew when to stop) and it pushed it downward a bit.

Mine sags, flaps, and swings in the breeze... the 1/8" folded stock "reinforcement" along the bottom edge rusted out long ago, and I can flex the center of the bumper up and down with two fingers. There are rust holes all over the bottom of the back of the bumper.

Fortunately I got an almost perfect bumper off a friend of mine (who is building an offroad-only rig and was going to build a custom heavy duty bumper anyways) and will be stripping it down, strengthening it, and repainting it. My plan is to remove the 1/8" stock reinforcement and cut away just enough sheet metal that I can put in a section of 3x3 0.250" stock instead, add a recessed rear receiver at the center, and then replace the end mount tabs with some custom ones made from 10" wide 0.250" bar stock I got.

Basically this is what I arrived at after buying all the material to make myself a stock lookalike hitch, then realizing I could get rid of a brewing rust problem (the stock reinforcement bar collects salt/sand/water) and gain back some ground clearance all at the same time.

Mine took a small hit at one time but thats not why it sags. Needing to tow a trailer but not being able to find a receiver hitch, I had to install one of those little bolt under bumper receivers. Having that receiver bolted to tha bottom side of tha bumper plus having to use a 4.5" drop ball creates too much leverage for the bumper bracket bolts to support. No matter how tight I tried to get um the bumper would still sag/twist downward after a few miles of towing. After jacking it back up where it belongs I put a couple of spot welds on tha brackets to keep um from twisting downwards. It still has a little sag/twist though. :wall:

Pretty sure my front bumper is rolled under a little as well. Looks like somebody musta hit something square on or they were pushing something by tha way its rolled damn near even on both sides. :dunno:
